I found a lot of discussions comparing octatrack to Ableton + Push 2 but not so much recently.
I think Elektron’s sequencer is world class, and i’m trying to find something similar in the computer based world.
Now that Isotonik PrEditor is out for some time and compatible with Push 2, it seems everyone can now happily custom Push and sequence various crazy stuff in an “elektron-ish” way.
In the meantime Ableton Live is continuing to evolve with Push in mind (v9.7),
So i would love to have a feedback from you guys!
Is the Pr Editor/Push solution working fine, for elektron-sequencing style?
For those who know both Push2 and Octatrack, what are the pros/cons for these solutions today?
Now with Ableton 9.7 you can also sample on the fly with Push, more or less i think as you would with an octatrack. Select input, record, slice, stretch, sequence with p-locks without having to look at the computer screen.
Not an octa specialist though, this is why i ask, to get the differencies or similarities
Got 2 main differencies between OT/push sequencers, following an other thread.
1/push sequencer is polyphonic while octa is mono.
2/ automations on push are per-step while for elektron it is per-note.
Per-step automation is uncool because you can have abrupt changes during note decays. (If i understood correctly).
Anyway it doesn’t lead to the same results.
Ableton + Push 2 extends far beyond anything the OT is capable of.
M4L and Granulator for instance.
A good thing yes. But maybe too much of a good thing
I often think that the mono triggering thing in the OT was completely by design
I seriously doubt they tried it out and then omitted it just despite us
Hey you can always sample the chord you want to hear right?
Per note automation is more useful than per step automation. It means your automation is separate from your sequence. It can have a different time signature to the note events. As far as abrupt endings goes then you have to manually add fade in/outs to your automation events. There really isn’t an easy way to implement that. The Elektrons get around it with parameter slide. But then the note length thing becomes something you have to consider more carefully.
Or use some device that has release/decay control of a parameter happening after an automation step. Like slew amount or a smoothed sample and hold type thing
Oh yeah great idea.
would be able to automate this “device” with push. The device then sends controls to various things with its own automation curve (parametric attack decay, or maybe note choke!). Great idea to kind of bypass the default per-step push thing.
Do you know such a device?
of course with the push / ableton you can also real time record automation - so it doesn’t have to be step based at all.
and you can do things like record/sequence cc on a separate track, if you want to separate notes and effects.
… pretty much endless possibilities, especially if bring M4L into the equation.
(I will grant some of these things might require initial setup on a computer… then perhaps saving as a device for recall on push)
You could try messing about with the LFO plugin in the Max4Live devices. It has a “Smooth” parameter that adds slew to the rise and fall of the LFO waveshape. You can literally then map the LFO device to any parameter you like. You can have many LFOs on the same track modulating loads of stuff. It’s great. One of the most indispensable tools of the Max4Live plugins.
