PULSAR-23 by SOMA

You can hear the subtle randomness on default kick. I think it’s more organic in line with the design philosophy of the machine. It still kicks balls. But some will prefer the osc reset on the mod, as the click will be more consistent. Again just subtle, hardly noticeable in a track.

Thanks… so no real need to open it up and flip the switch unless you have really depleted everything there is already to hear from the BD then

From now on, the PULSAR Screw is a real find for bargain hunters! Same functionality as PULSAR Turret, but at a much lower price because we used screws instead of expensive custom turrets!
The price for the PULSAR Screw is 1.200 EUR net!

You want to buy? Contact SOMA EU: somasynthseu@gmail.com or your local store (check the list of official dealers on our site).

Hmm can changing the turrets to screws really make that much of a difference?

Guessing the sales have dropped and maybe they’ve already recouped time/money on r&d. Can imagine they’ll continue to sell more at this more affordable price.

This is really handy because I’ve been trying to see some images of the screw version of the Utilities module. I don’t see any reason to go with the more expensive turrets based on this, and anything that makes the P23 more affordable is to be celebrated.

I suppose the most important thing is they’ve filed down the tips, though if the idea of an instrument you have to wound yourself to play was going to occur to anyone, my money would be on Soma.

I have to say I have a screw version of the Ornament-8 and compared to the turrets on my Pulsar the experience of patching it is much much worse.
But then the price is also much much better…

Oh no! Harder to attach multiple clips? Or poorer connection in general? The price difference isn’t so great with the Utilities, so I don’t mind going for the turrets there if there are practical downsides to the screws.

Did they make too many units and now can’t move them? Some big sales on Pulsar-23 and now the discounted version.

Hope it all goes well for them. I still love mine and just wish to add a Lyra8 at some point

Harder to attach multiple clips and easier to disconnect them by mistake. No difference in how well the conncections work though.

Ah, right. Probably less of an issue with the Utilities, but with the turrets on the Pulsar it’s very easy to knock a clip off when you’re trying to get through the jungle to move a knob, after which of course you have to work out what it was actually clipped to in the first place. So anything that makes that more common sounds like a hassle.

I really wanted to love the Pulsar but it’s got a very particular sound that I didn’t gel with. The internal construction is such that each voice seems to have its own card that can be serviced/replaced. I’d love if they came up with some alternative voice cards for it.

Yeah I don’t think I’d use pulsar as my sole drum machine, but as a compliment, it’s pretty amazing. In as simple use case, hi hats and clap/snare are so malleable and then you can get more complex and make complimentary percussion lines generated by the shaos and clocked from another machine.

Plus another use case i am really loving is the ability to send sound into the pulsar and live perform with the delay and effects. Love doing that for vocals and melodies. It just makes live performing and adding buildups etc so fast and easy to do.

I haven’t done much to connect the Pulsar up to the outside world yet, other than a fun test of the SQ-1 sequencing the bass synth and the Force snatching loops. For me thus far it’s settled in two main places - using it as a solitary sound source being constantly prodded and nudged, and using the looper to set up rhythms and then taking them apart with the cables - being able to sync just about everything to the master clock and having the Shaos outputs repeat makes it an absolute delight to loop with, especially with a couple of clamps on the delay section.

I find it’s also one of those rare devices where unpatching and knowing that you’re losing that particular sound forever is a nice calming experience, because you can just make another.

This. But since the Pulsar has its sound signature, we are always around the sound we had.
With practice, part of patching is predictable, so we’re never totaly lost. Nice underground percussive synth

I wonder how easy it would be to mod with banana jacks directly onto the thread.

Found a good deal on a Pulsar and YT videos have got me hooked on trying one.

Is buying additional croc clips recommended or unlikely to require (trying to kill two birds one stone if recommended when ordering)

Sweet! I mostly run out of the short ones and would like to have some more of those. :relaxed:

Ah ok. Do they come with the unit in both long and short?
