I got a nice price on a Prophet 08 PE module. Wondering if I should get it to go with my Digitakt - Tascam 424 Portastudio. It’s my dream synth since I started. I love James Blake, Radiohead, Frank Ocean and lots of other stuff that always caught my ear!
My concern is about the ease of use and intuitivness of the machine…
Is there any menu diving? un-intuitive stuff?
You really want something, but then you opt for the ‘other’ option, only to be disappointed, and then kick yourself for not getting what you really wanted.
I just sold one. If you dig that brassy sound with tons of modulation options, it’s a no-brainer.
Personally I prefer VCO synths from DSI sound-wise but that big round tone makes it harder to fit chords in a mix.
the big round tone of a vco dsi synth or the prophet 08? the prophet 08 feels more like a dsi bread and butter synth. i love the brassiness of it on the records i listed actually. I have been trying to recreate that saw wave on plugins / different synths but couldn’t quite get there…
I had one, sold it. Not because of the standard “it’s too brassy” or “it’s DCO” excuse. I think it sounds good. Modulation options are crazy good. Rather, I wanted more SLOP, because yeah, slop rules, I love vintage sounding synths.
The Rev2 has much more in the slop department and of course the P6 is also amazing. I saved up for a P6 and very happy with the upgrade.
I do love some of that lofi analog vintage detune. :<
I usually use stuff like rc-20 on my synths but now that i’m kind of OTB i rather have a good thing built in
Ok, in that case, I think you should listen to the different character of the sound. Look for demos of 08/Rev2/P6 and see what you think. Check out Starsky Carr’s channel on YouTube for example, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP0Z_YWvU7E&t=77s
“The analog oscillators in the Prophet '08 are very accurate, and will not drift. This works
great for accurate sounds, and allows precise de-tuning. Oscillator Slop allows
subtle amounts of frequency drift. For larger amounts, use a random LFO or
white noise mod.”
Sure, but I could not simulate it to sound like the Rev2 och P6 sound with larger amounts of slop. The smooth and and subtle behaviour I found hard to replicate, but might be user error of course. Not a synth engineer or anything but I do think the two techniques sound different to my ears.
It might not be able to be fully replicated. But how I would do it without the P08 in front of me (as an extreme example)-
LFO 1 in random to Osc 1 tune (longest frequency or “0” so essentially a one-shot, low depth positive modulation)
LFO 2 in random to Osc 2 tune (same but negative)
LFO 3 in sine to overall pitch or “OscAllFreq” (slow-ish rate, very low depth)
LFO 4 in random (or try others?) to LFO3 rate, adjust to taste
ALSO try using Slop on top of these for additional randomness.
Throw some Pan Spread in there.
You could get those “Dawn Chorus” or BoC sounds pretty quickly.
