Pro Tools - Only 15 output tracks DTII and DNII

Unsure if there are any other Electron Overbridge users of Pro Tools in here, if so I would value some input;

There appears to be a limit of 15 tracks available (of the 20 exposed by Overbridge) to assign as inputs to audio tracks when using the Digitakt II or Digitone II Overbridge AAX plugins. Does anyone know if this is a Pro Tools limitation (maybe for multi-out instruments) or an Overbridge limitation? It’s similar to Ableton, but I was expecting Pro Tools to differ.

See the attached screenshot where you can see the 15 exposed inputs (there are actually 20 available via Overbridge)

This seems to be a limitation of Overbridge, as it appears in other DAWs as well.

I think that specifically regarding the max number of pro tools audio track instances, it will depend on the version of pro tools, so the answer to that varies. Check the avid website for specifics.

I’ve read that Ableton and perhaps logic both only support 15 tracks, but with pro tools maybe it’s an OB limitation instead.

Not sure if this helps, but I found an offsite topic about a different VST which implies that this may be related to input bus layout or some other factor related to pro tools configuration.

Still, this is an older article, I don’t know if the current pro tools paradigm matches this or not.

As @shigginpit alluded to here, are you possibly on Artist?

To clarify, this is an issue for some DAWs and most likely in this particular instance is an issue of the chosen DAW pricing tier and the included limitations of that.

@4517, I seem to remember having 16+ track output while using other devices in Ableton. Maschine (VST) and MC707 (Class compliant audio over USB) for example, both do not have 15 track limits when multitracking in Ableton.

MC707 might be a different situation, but Maschine should be similar. I am not sure about MPC VST, but I have never heard mention of any track limit when multitracking.

I won’t go too deep into this as it’s not about PT, but Live has always been limited to 16 stereo outs from a plugin:

As far as I can remember Logic has this same limitation due to AU, but that might’ve changed at some point.

Yeah, it’s a mystery where that 16th track is going when using Overbridge.

The 16th is the main output. I’ve compared channel counts and Maschine and OB both have the same number (1 main pair, 15 additional).

So, they are the same total number, they just use different naming schemes.

See here for example. You can count the number of pairs Maschine provides and it is also 15 (not counting the default outs).

I’m using Pro Tools Studio (native), so this is not related to voice count.

Might be related to this in some way in that case:

Would recommend sending Elektron’s support a ticket about this whilst we wait for someone else using Pro Tools to chime in.

Ha! Very interesting. I have raised a ticket with Elektron but I’ll add this additional info in case they are in fact using Juce for the OB plugins.

Thanks for responding!

Honestly, I haven’t run into this issue while multi tracking in a DAW with Overbridge. I find OB stand alone to be the chillest way to get stems. If I do record with a DAW, I usually group things and don’t often need more than 8 tracks.

The issue isn’t so much getting stems, but keeping everything moving and synchronised when writing with other hardware other than Electron

In that case, I don’t think you even need overbridge.
