So I recently acquired reading glasses. Just curious if wearing glasses has helped improve your productivity on screen and with hardware? As they are really new to me just curious what to expect and if there is any benefits in terms of being able to concentrate longer in the studio environment.
I had to get them after getting cataract surgery, and they are ok- just annoying having to carry them around, so I have a few pairs around the house. That said, I only really use them for the computer- most of my gear I can see the screen ok without them on. I can’t really compare concentration time in the studio before and after because I was basically going blind before I had the surgery! I can just about use the computer without them but it’s not very comfortable.
The worst is if I go out to a restaurant, I’ve forgotten to bring my glasses and the text on the menu is tiny- then I have to get someone to read it for me…
I normally avoid wearing my glasses, as I hate them (have had glasses since I was about 10), but I always wear them when I’m programming/sequencing.
I am hoping that using glasses will allow more screentime as I have been working without glasses and felt the eye strain so after work was not really keen on doing anything heavy concentration related. I am hoping that now I have glasses, i will feel less strained and be able to do that little bit extra on the screen and also on hardware. My long vision is still fine, its the reading and closeness which is the problem.
Do you find that the glasses help when doing sequencing and sound design? Without them my concentration has been poor, so I am hoping that I can get more mileage with the glasses.
I do find them helpful.
My eyes got worse since mid 40’s, prior to that never needed specs, I’m about 1.5 prescription for sequencing etc, and 2 for tiny fonts. I can’t really do any sequencing without the specs now, unless it is stuff that does not rely on a screen.
I think looking at phones, ipads and computers all day fucks your vision TBH as well as age related lens degradation, I have the blue light filter on my main pair of specs to try to minimise the impact of using modern devices with screens.
Snap. Until my late thirties I’d never needed glasses. Now I need +3.5 for reading and +2.5 for most other stuff. I thought it was strain from working in dark conditions for years in work but my optician said it’s just age related degeneration as you say. Good thing is I can still get away with cheapo reading glasses. I’ve got a one pair of prescription shades for driving but that’s it. At the rate I drop/sit on/otherwise destroy glasses I’d be bankrupt if they were all prescription ones!
Hah, yeah poundland FTW, got a pair in the car, a pair in almost every room as I always forget them
Well… I started with those ones (and I’ve still got a few pairs) but I’ve found a few places that sell better quality ones. My fave pair came from Lidl or Aldi and my ‘best’ ones I get from TKMaxx
They might be ladies ones but that’s just how I roll…
Probably some of mine are too!
I have a pair of older reading glasses in the music room that never leave. I can’t read anything properly without them now!
I need even stronger ones now for books/cellphone - there are pairs scattered all over the house (including the failed varifocal experiment)!
I’m glad I’m on on my own with a house/car/van full of specs!
To read something small, I actually have to remove my glasses…
WTF! You must have bumping into shit for years before that.
I’ve been in specs since 12, and blame it on having sheet music smacked in front of my face on an upright piano for years. Now I can’t see any of that without my near field specs, so yeh, it helps.
Hah, but on stage, never wore them so I couldn’t see the audience
I didn’t realise my eyesight was going at first, I just thought I needed longer arms… until I tried a pair of my Mam’s readers on… everything was in HD! After that it was a slippery slope. I went for an eye test some time later and my prescription was +2.5 both eyes which was what I was using at the time.
I’m 49 and noticed degradation about 2 months ago, so went and got them checked. Turns out my right eye is poor, so I have reading glasses now. It’s probably due to working on screens all day then using computers, gaming, phones all night.
I only got them a week ago but finding I’m really relying on them now when doing any computer, phone work or other reading. I also got the blue tint.
Got my first pair of readers from the hardware store about 9 months ago and already I have pairs piling up around the house, shop, studio, etc.
Like what @Bunker described, my arms just weren’t long enough to read a book or a tape measure anymore. I saw it coming for years but I’m stubborn.
I don’t mind using them except that I’m super photophobic so I need to figure out some reading shades.
@Cosmic if it’s just one eye giving you trouble you should rock a monocle!
Haha yes thought about that or just a pirate patch
Haha. That’s more practical since it doesn’t require also wearing a top hat.
