I suddenly got booked to do a Dnb liveset next friday but got nothing prepared so Im a bit stressed out. Im gonna run whole songs thru the OT but cut out kicks and some other stuff + add a drummachine and 303. Everything through a mixer.
What is the “best” way to export the stems of the complete tracks? With headroom and maybe compress in the OT or use the mastered versions? I got very limited time to try this out and analyze so Im hoping someone got any experience/suggestions? I got no compressor/limiter to use on the master out.
I guess part of the problem is figuring out what you’re comfortable using - I would use Ableton Live to prepare loops and stems, using EQ to cut the fat and compression to glue elements of the stems together before exporting at a comfortable level.
You can do this with lots of software or even hardware, but Live is my cosy place.
Thanks! I use Live. And I see that I wrote that I will run stuff thru the OT. Supertired. I will run whole complete tracks FROM the OT. I have done similar livesets alot before and I usually just wing it with some loops normalized and others not. Now Im gonna do playback + fx, 909 and 303 and just wants it to be as Hifi as possible. Shit im confusing myself.
Main question is: If I play a mastered compressed track from the Octatrack and wants to add stuff over that. Could it be better to use the same backtrack but with more dynamics/headroom?
I’m also super tired so I may have missed that mention of running stuff through the OT. Sounds great, can’t go wrong with 909 and 303.
You say you have no compressor/limiter but could you use channel eight as the master and incorporate the compressor onto that? With some careful knob tweaking, you can basically get it to react to the incoming audio like a limiter would. You’d be down to seven tracks but if you’re playing backing tracks, a 909, 303 and effects you might be able to get away with it.
