Portable USB Midi Host: What do you use?

What do you use or want?

Retrokits RK-005. It’s the bomb dude, and it sips power sooo sparingly from a USB battery that will it will last almost forever. It also has analog sync and 5 pin in and out. An unpowered small usb hub connected to it will give you as much USB MIDI as you need.

I think it’s not being made now though so the RK-006 is the newest version, it’s incredibly tight too and is even better. It’s like the RK-004 and RK-005 combined into one device with improvements.

+1. Love mine, and it always just works.

Does anything like the expert sleepers fh2 exist in standalone?

Axoloti.

as USB MIDI host, MIDI processor, occasionally as FX unit and/or for primitive sample playback.

not bad for its size.

Thanks I’m going to have to consider that. I don’t like that I have to do my own case of course. Does it support hubs?

not yet. hub support is in development version, but no one has any idea when it’s going to be released.

regairding case: i just found 3d printer model on community forum, downloaded and ordered it locally — problem solved.

I’m now wondering if there’s anything the RK-006 can’t do, compared to say the iConnect MIDI devices.

USB hub. But their smaller devices don’t have this support.

MIDI daisy-chaining with other iConnectivity devices.

I originally wanted to buy a MIDI host but then connected my digitakt through a USB C hub to my iPad pro and that solved it for me and my other synth

+1 for the RK-005

Yeah I want to use my midi fighter twister with my hardware. I don’t use iPad for music. If the screen is off can you still do usb midi -> iPad -> digitakt?

I have to have a look but I believe so. I’m using AUM for the MIDI piping by the way.

Just dragging this one up to see what the best portable options are to get my Digitakt to control my OP1.

Anything small and battery powered?

I use the hobbytronics one, which can run off anything providing usb power. Works well with the OG OP-1.

Be warned though, on their page they reckon it may not be 100%, although I’ve had no issues
