Polyend Tracker Mini

They added big font mode! But yes, agreed!

To each their own of course, but in my opinion we need to be less tolerant of quality issues like this. This is a $1000 dollar machine (CDN) after all.

The M8 has the most satisfyingly consistent UI an control experience out there. It’s the only device I’ve used for music (outside of traditional instruments) that I can use without ever having to look at the buttons.

Once you’ve learned the button presses (which took me a couple hours) you have a device that’s very intuitive…

Contrast that with other amazing devices I’ve loved, like a Deluge and OT, they require much more brain power and fiddling…

I don’t get what would be weird about the workflow other than it’s a tracker?

Edit- Ok, maybe no live input of notes from directly on the device…

To me that’s the main thing that stops me from giving trackers a go. I want to ‘play’ the notes because more often than not my music comes as a result of noodling with a sound. To me, something like a theoretical MPC Mini would be more up my alley with playable pads and a more traditional sequencer. I guess the MC-101 is the closest approximation but that one is held back by the Roland workflow which kills all the creativity. :see_no_evil::joy:

I just didn’t get what’s going on when I watched some M8 videos. Not speaking about tracking itself, more in terms of general navigation. Maybe it’s a different story in person, it’s possible I’d be just as confused if I watched Renoise videos without any prior experience with it. But PT(M) seems more similar to Renoise and classic computer trackers than M8.

You forgot the giant knob on the side that opens a popup that hides half of the screen when you think about touching it

This is more or less the case. Videos on it without having the context of using it confused the hell out of me. After a couple hours I was flying around and able to do all the basic things. A few of the shortcuts took some manual referencing still, but it just kind of clicked for me overall.

The OG tracker from polyend has pads you can use to “play” it. It’s one of the reasons I love using it

Yeah, it’s a better option for me but I’m ruling that out for a few reasons, mainly no built-in battery (a must for me, a groovebox without a battery isn’t worth its soul in 2023 if you ask me), and no stereo sampling. But that’s based on my very specific and perhaps weird use case of making 90% of my music in bed and moving my gear from the bedroom, to the sofa, to the kitchen and into the studio throughout the day.

Yeah that make sense. When I first watched videos of it I couldn’t fully grasp how it all worked even though I got the concept. It’s becomes much clearer once it’s in your hands.

In my case built-in battery is actually one of the reasons against buying it. It will essentially make a device electronic trash in a few years or in best case it’ll be expensive and probably complicated to replace. I wonder what was wrong with rechargable AA batteries. Cheap to buy anywhere, simple to replace and you could even have spares, so no need to recharge or to have powerbank connected when they’re empty.

I don’t disagree but in practice I’ve found the batteries in my devices to be more than adequate in real-world use and to be perfectly honest, I tend to not own devices like grooveboxes for longer than the lifespan of its battery.

It would be nice if they could standardize it so you could easily replace it. For example, replacing the battery of the MPC Live 2 seems easy enough, but that may not be true for smaller devices like the Polyend Tracker Mini.

AA batteries are a pretty poor experience in practice. I dreaded having to peel them free underneath my MC-101 and SP-404 MKII all the time. If they could be charged from within the device, it would be better, but as it stands, I’d much rather deal with carefully opening up and replacing a built-in battery every 5-10 years than messing with AA’s every other day.

Yeah, sadly they will never be standardized and easy replacable, unless it becomes compulsory by law. Ability to charge AAs inside the device would indeed be best of both worlds, since they are already standard, replacable and even modular. I wonder why this is not possible in more devices, especially power hungry ones like grooveboxes. I know some computer keyboard that can do this, but can’t think of anything else.

Right, my Logitech mouse also recharges its AA battery from its micro USB cable so clearly it can be done. Would be a great solution indeed.

tracker mini manual says maximum 48 slices in the sample editor. just double checking this is the case before I make new sample chains.

can anyone confirm you can’t do more than 48 slicez?

If it’s like the OG PE tracker, it’s 48 indeed.
