Play sounds like instruments on OT?

Wondering if I can create and play “sounds” like we can on the Digitakt. Kind of like a synth.

Yes with collections of single cycle waveforms, played in ping pong loops. Add amp envelope and filter env/LFO to taste  use the chromatic mode of the trig buttons to play.

Worth mentioning that the OT doesn’t respond to velocity and can’t do per-track polyphony. You can get around those if you have a MIDI processor but it’s not ideal. There’s many ways to use it expressively however, especially if you exploit features like slicing and the scene crossfader.

The biggest downside compared to the dt in this regard is the fact the OT doesn’t record note lenght.

Live sample is much easier and the Octatrack does it really well.

There is also the limited pitch range. 2 octaves vs 7 octaves.

Some workarounds with RATE for lower range, but pitch up is limited to 1 octave.

I like to use sliced chromatic samples (64 slices = 5 octaves and 3 semitones; higher range with scaled slices, transpose with pitch)

Good to know - glad I asked about it thanks. Will not replace the Digitakt.
Do MIDI tracks have such limitations?
I have a thousand more questions.

They can record length and velocity, notes are full range (0-127).

OT midi note length values are not steps and max length is less than 128 steps.

Rec Quantize is better on Digis, quantizing to closest step. OT records on the step after if you’ve played later…
