I wanna see a list of The 100 Best Pitchfork Reviews of All Time
Not in this genre but most of mine over the last decade seem to be by Laura Snapes whenever I like one and check who it’s by. Love them or hate them, they’ve had some brilliant writers of the years. Anyway… rap albums!
I want to see a list of the 100 best pitchforks of all time.
I can list the 100 best rap albums without pitchfork’s help.
Super pissed my Rap album didn’t make the list!
Putting ghostface killah ahead of NAS illmatic is very controversial. You’ll get shot in Queensbridge for doing that although it’s hard for me to really even compare them because those are both pretty monumental to me, but more so Killah Priest’s debut solo album Heavy Mental.
The order of these things is usually just a tally of how many writers voted for them or some other points total algorithm. I half wish they shuffled them on refresh with stuff like this.
I can’t even look… but I’m probably going to get a good sample out of ghostface over this, and it ain’t gonna be nice
Here’s The Source’s take on it from 27 years ago if you want to see how little has changed.
This list is real bad. But I also enjoy lists just for fun’s sake, it’s all opinion anyway.
So, I appreciate this list, and also it’s absolutely garbage.
I remember when I was still reading Pitchfork, and they started to try to cover rap. Total cringe. The entire writing staff has probably turned over, ship of Theseus style, but I still wouldn’t go there for opinions on rap. Or anything else any more, really.
We can only remember P4k for what it was in its heyday:
This line is timeless:
“Comparing this to other albums is like comparing an aquarium to blue construction paper.”
It’d be nice to actually see some opinions on the list or surprising favourites that made it rather than cliche-wanking about how uncool pitchfork is / was but I suspect we’re not going to get that!
Just glad we still have music journalism out there as someone who used to be one. And know this’ll probably get a lot of people listening to some great records.
Goodnight!
It’s a pretty wack list man. I have a hard time comparing opinions of the undereducated to my own experience with hip hop and rap since the mid 90’s so if that’s the kind of conversation you want to have is talking about the validity of the positioning of opinions of 23 year old interns working at pitchfork about albums that weren’t even released yet when they were born I do understand and I will gracefully bow out. I apologize for the trouble I’ve caused.
Okay, here is one. I appreciated the inclusion of De La Soul’s “Buhloone Mindstate”, which is a seriously underappreciated album, and the last one by them that I cared for.
It might be a good album, but in a ‘best of all time’ list De La have several others which would deserve to surpass it for inclusion.
Which is why this list is wack.
i like seeing juvenile so high up there, but it really should have been his collab album with birdman. hell put it at number 1
I couldn’t be more useless with that list, I’ve never listened to any rap album. I only know some rap songs from the 80s.
Not a great list. It was an entertaining skim though.
