There is no recording of automation on the SP-16. You can only parameter lock steps, not record changes over time.
Any of you have any thumbdrive issues with this? I just bought and formatted a SanDisk ultrafit 128 and it sees the drive but when I click it, it doesnât show any folders. I suspect the issue may be that this is a USB 3.1 drive. I need to find a drive that I can use with this, 128 is probably more space than I need as well.
I tried again with a basic 16 gig thumbdrive, formatted it on my Mac as FAT32 and same thing - It sees the drive, I press the knob, it says âloadingâŚâ for 1 second and then just shows an open folder next to the drive name and no files.
I must be doing something wrong. I am just loading samples on here in folders. If a sample is not in 44.1, will the Toraiz not read any of the files? Damn, this is frustrating AF, I have been messing with this all day and just want to get to work on it with my samples. I guess Ill have to go internal drive if I canât figure it out, but thats not optimal at all.
EDIT - WoooâŚfigured it out. So the Sp16 actually sets up the USB drive. I put my 128 back in and saw the Pioneer folders, moved everything into the samples folder and its working perfect. The manual didnt describe this at allâŚso crazy. So there is a hierarchy it expects to see.
Did you grab the sound packs on the pioneer site? Just curious because I load the project files and there are sequences and effects chains in there but no samples loaded. I checked and the samples are in the project files. The install instructions seemed pretty simple, i followed them to the tee. Id love to mess with these projects if I can figure out how to do it.
Scrolling through my own samples and loading them is no problem but they are in the samples folder. The sound pack samples are in the project folder. No idea if that is the issue.
Anyway itâs currently playing through the project songs, showing the steps, etc but I canât hear anything.
I did. I think you may have to load the whole project to get all the stuff - samples, scenes and patterns
Thatâs what I did and it seemed to work
Hit me up if it doesnât
Any of you all mess with doing the multitrack export out of the Sp16, bring the tracks into your DAW or whatever else you use, maybe add some more sounds/FX and then run everything back thru the SP16 filters?
I feel like that could be a pretty awesome way to circumvent any DAW/hardware sync issues people have while also being able to live perform the arrangement with filter transitions and also get that overdrive.
After that Ill probably run THAT mix through a Boum again because I like things dirty, but yeah - I may try this out.
So far so good with the SP. I figured out how to fine tune chops - the playback section, not the Sample edit is where the good stuff is. That was throwing me off for a while. Also trimming down a long sample and not getting a preview of it really confused me. I may be doing something wrong there, who knows.
I always use the exportâŚ
What I do is resample anything I want filter/drive on so that any track that needs analog goodness has it. Then I do the export.
I do occasionally use the SP-16 as an outboard filter/drive the way youâre describing, but typically just single tracks so that I donât lose the flexibility of a multitracked mixing session.
Oh thats a good idea. I guess my issue is that I love the HPF and LPFs as transition FX as well and would love to sweep those live during recording. Maybe I can get over that and use plugins or something. The filters on this are just gold though.
Im still figuring out the workflow I want, since I tend to add long pads or sweeps in my music (house/techno), and like to do it by hand while I record.
But when you resample, are you grabbing 4 bars each time of the already sequenced part or just one shots? That is an interesting way to do it. I did not know that the resample went through the analogue filter/drive before printing.
Yup, brilliant feature!
I usually resample as a four bar loop so that I donât have to reprogram the sequence haha. Also really handy for adding filter movement to boring synth samples since LFO modulation of the digital multimode filter can be a bit difficult to dial in.
F man this is a good idea, thank you. 4 bars is enough to sweep a filter anyway.
Sorry for the questions but I think I almost have it all sorted now. I am guessing you typically donât use effects like the delay or verb and do that with other hardware or in the DAW? I can see myself using the delay on some tracks, the reverb probably not. This also makes it where I donât need the ducker (its pretty darn nice though) since I can sidechain in the DAW. Plus add extra sounds if I decide and then just reglue everything with the Boum once I am happy. I like the lofi a lot, need to mess with the phaser more.
Also of course I can 2 track out of the SP16 when I want as well if I want a more old school vibe. The resampling is a huge help I am sure for people who 2 track out and want to filter their samples and still have 2 slots. That same, 4 bar resampling workflow would apply as well - great tip!
I have a track I am working on finishing on the Sp16 and was curious if this is the workflow you use - make an arrangement with multiple patterns and then go back and resample tracks in each pattern that you want going through the filter?
I ask since I was curious how many sounds you are using in your patterns. I assume we can only load 16 total sounds per song. Or does this device let you load new sounds per each pattern? That is where I am not sure how you are doing this unless you resample first and then for new patterns, just load the resampled parts and chop themâŚetc for variation.
Hopefully this makes sense.
You have scenes too if you need more than 16 sounds.
So you export those scenes and patterns all as one track per sound in a song arrangement? I havent gotten to that point yet but I am trying to avoid any gotcha situations. For now I am just making different patterns and an arrangement and not resampling 4 bar loops of stuff.
How are you able to resample the analog filter? I was under the impression that the resampling source does not come post DSI filter?
Apologies, I just checked the manual and you are indeed correct that resampling with filter is possible!
Its the filter not being available on the sample input that I was thinking of.
For anyoneâs future reference
Yeah its pretty damn awesome. Now I just have to figure out how to juggle all the different saved resamples in one track. lol.
How do patterns/scenes work? I am messing with this now and have 1 pattern. I copy it to pattern 2 and thatâs easy. But the mutes are the same on each pattern and I canât set them to change when I switch from pattern 1 to 2. Tried it in the arranger as well. Iâm reading the manual and not getting it. What am I missing?
Mutes arenât saved per pattern
Ok scenes store mutes and different sounds and then you can go to each scene and assign different patterns to it? So if scene 1 had an 8 bar sample, I would chop the sample in half and trigger the first 4 bars in pattern 1, scene 1. Then second half in pattern 2 scene 1. Then arrange so they play 1 after the other.
Then if I wanted to bring in other sounds that were muted, I copy and paste scene 1 to Scene 2 and unmute stuff in scene 2.
Is that basically the concept?
Now if you are able to bring in new sounds for every scene then thatâs fucking sweet and would explain the resample technique.
quick bump - if anyone can share how they arrange a track on this Id appreciate it. I really like to use mutes first to get the structure down. So does that mean I have to use a difference scene different mutes? Seems like a waste almost.
Do you all just delete the sequence you muted and use patterns instead? I canât find really any documentation or videos on how people actually make full arrangements on this thing.
