It’s a solid really good sounding synth. But if you’re not big on menu diving, you may want to consider something else. I love mine.
Fair enough; if it’s still around during the end of year discounts I think I’ll grab it. I love the sp-16 & squid.
Yeah, it definitely sounds nice, but is a bit menu divey. I had one a few years ago. I’m not sure they ever fixed the midi bug, which if I remember correctly, anytime you changed the pattern/preset it went out of sync.
Ok nice…is the jitter pretty bad or like 1-2ms? Also I am wondering if I can export the stems out and then send the whole mix back into the master filter/drive, that could be a cool alternative.
Yea 1-2ms. Also that mix trick works too
Oh man, awesome. the Analog Rytm jitters about the same when I sync to the ERM, and everything still sounds great. I will try using the ERM swing, I never do that, its a great tip.
This lets me split out the kick and run it through my SSL as well, which is a cheat code for kick drums.
If you search for the AS-1 on this forum you’ll find a fair bit of love for it. It really does sound great. The menu diving can be off putting but it’s fairly shallow and if you know what parameters you want to adjust (rather than just random tweaking) and develop some muscle memory it’s pretty quick.
Personally I find it a bit much, but the synth is forgiven due to its small size, the quirky but weirdly playable capacitive keyboard and great presets. I think it layers with itself really well too, and it seems easy to make things with it that somehow just sound finished.
Echo all of above. I still ponder getting another but the menu diving was painful. Sounded great and interfaces with sp16 really well.
All I need to push me over the edge is a bit of a drop in the price. I’ve been burned with used gear so I’m twice shy and like to buy new.
The squid and sp-16 are massively underrated, even with their “flaws”. It still blows my mind when I think what could have been with these things; even more so if they were able to put them in one machine.
I’m selfishly kind of glad they are not well known, price gouging on “secret/special” gear is bad enough with too many items as is.
I feel like the good prices on the toraiz stuff came and went 1-2 years ago. I was basically the same with SP-16 for a while, just waiting on price drops, but when they came I just couldn’t justify another sequencer/sampler.
My AS1 I got as a used ebay purchase for a steal on new years eve before I did a no gear new year (7-8 months at least).
Got one coming my way for under $800. That’s not bad. I know they were going at $600 for a while and I probably blew that. But since the sp16 has 16 tracks thats pretty much a track made in that box if you want it that way. Im going to compare it to my rytm. I really miss not having slicing on that.
Arrangement mode + scenes + very usable EQ and filters…yea if you don’t want to play things live you can make killer tracks onboard and record them through the analog filter.
That stereo drive is tasty, brings samples to life. Definitely the most underrated and capable sampler ever made.
Plus it’s easy to use and straight forward. Plus it sounds incredible to me.
It’s interesting to me that some of the techno producers I follow use the SP-16.
It’s awesome
Another little thing that totally sold me on this machine was the mixer view. Its fantastic. With the Rytm I am always not 100% sure on if my kick is too loud or quiet. The fact that I can balance the mix inside the Sp16 is huge. imo.
Im not sure if the FX are good enough to just record the stereo outs from this and call it a day or not, but some of the tracks I have heard made in the SP16 sound like releases to me.
This is always the part I have to figure out once the gear is my hands - How to record the results. Multitrack, stereo outs…WAV export…etc.
The FXs for the most part are…useable…depending on what you are going for multi-tracking or exporting the tracks is probably the way to go if you want full on, modern production value. But I think if you start with good samples that don’t need a lot of EQ because they fit together already, you can get pretty far. I mean, I totally sample my laptop and iPad all the time to get more processed sounds inside the SP-16.
Think about the SP-16 other way around–let it be the end of the road, not the beginning.
Yeah I make underground house/techno so I am not looking for EDM polish. I do like to add some sounds sometimes later in the DAW though, so there is that. I guess for me it will be about how well my tracks sound arranged on the SP16. Like, can I do longer filter sweeps and build ups…things like that. Those dont work so well on the Rytm, its a hassle. So my workflow is typically to multitrack into the DAW and do that stuff in there. I like the concept of not doing that with the SP16 if possible though.
Yea I’m not sure the SP-16 has anything over the RYTM in regards to long automation. There is a chance you can record automation in arrangement mode, but I wouldn’t swear to it.
Well the good news there is I can filter live while recording in. High pass and low pass via the master filter. So thats actually pretty dope. Also bumping up and down the drive a little bit at certain points could be nice as well.
Another attempt at techno with the SP-16. My favorite sampler
