Phrases that scare you off when buying gear. (Or should have.)

This one makes me run away fast.

Practically every old oscilloscope on ebay is sold as untested, probes mising etc. It seems that nobody knows how to test them or is able to hang on to the probes.

Legendary insider tip for people who don’t want to spend on yxz … (insert any gear category and piece of gear no one has ever heard of)

Not a phrase, but either one (ONE!!!) photo of the piece of gear (upside down or blurry ususally) or, even worse, one photo copied and pasted off of Sweetwater. Mint, of course. So so many red flags. It’s almost fun to spot them now.

Not sure if “minty fresh” scares me off but it’s cringe worthy.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a Roland R8 for a while, the MKI has a soft-touch kind of coating that does not wear well to say the least.

It’s remarkable how almost everyone with an R8 MKI for sale is incapable of taking a photo that’s in focus or isn’t compressed to the point of murkiness

“Photos to follow.”

“Smoke free studio/home” is a nice thing to see in a listing for me. I’ve bought a few things that absolutely stink of smoke to the point where I don’t want to use them as find the smell really offensive to my nostrils. I always forget to add it to my own listings.

I wonder if it’s a good enough reason to open a return on ebay as time doesn’t always seem to fully remove it?

That’s easy.

A phrase uttered by my inner voice:

This will complete my setup…

Same here! I don’t smoke at all and my sense of smell is extremely sensitive. I find the smell of weed horribly offensive, and the smell of stale cigarette smoke is even worse - it permeates everything and it can take weeks or months to get the smell out of plastics that have been inundated with it. I live in an apartment in a place with rather extreme weather, so I can’t just leave things outside or in a garage to air out. If somebody smokes in the same space their gear lives, I want to know it because I won’t buy from them.

I’ve bought a launchpad mini off eBay, and it smells of cigarette smoke so bad, no matter how much I clean it, just having it in the same room drastically impacts the odor; I packed it and locked it away. If you are a non-smoker, getting a piece of equipment from a heavy smoker will make you gravitate towards equipment that indicates it’s not from a smoker!

That coating isn’t helped by a cat taking up prolonged residence on said machine. As I can testify. Although it does give it a unique ‘patina’

Patina… there’s one to add to the list.
