Panning not heard through headphones

Hi yall, new user here. I am experiencing no change in pan positioning through a pair of decent headphones. i have yet to run the Rytm through a proper mixer/speaker setup so I am not sure if this lack of pan is heard through the left and right outs. Any feedback helps. Thanks.

Maybe it is a simple noob mistake of having the wrong track selected when you adjust the parameter? eg. you want to adjust the clap but it’s actually the snare track that is the currently selected track.

I do it all the time, thinking “why isn’t this working? It worked last time. Oh wait…duh” :joy:

Hi there, i have the same problem. I can`t hear panning through headphones output. Any solutions? Thanks!

Are you using stereo or mono 1/4 cables from your RYTM to mixer?

Hi, i talk only about headphone output. When i do panning, i hear it through the stereo output but it is not heard through the headphone output when i work only with headphones.

Are you using a 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor for your headphones? If yes, is it a stereo (TRS) or mono (TS) adaptor?

I have no problem with stereo imaging through the headphone output of my AR.

Oh thank you very much! Now i tried another headphones and it works fine

Don’t use headset headphones (those with “three rings” on the plug), they don’t fit well. Some 3.5 to 6,3 cm stereo adaptors have issues too. I’ve had the same phenomenon as the TO with these and also a dramatic volume drop due to lack of contact…

I’ve had a Rytm Mk1 for over a year and I’ve never gotten any stereo image from the headphones output. I’ve used the unit with two different headphones: Sennheiser HD595 with a 6,3mm jack and Shure SRH440 with a 3,5mm to 6,3mm adapter. No panning, no stereo image, it’s all mono.

For long I thought it was a feature, kinda like in the Korg Volcas (Bass and Beats at least), where the headphone output apparently is just a mono signal split to two channels. I thought it was odd, but possible, given that Elektron machines are known for being quirky.

But today I was playing the Rytm through Overbridge, with L and R main outputs routed as a stereo input to an audio channel in Ableton Live, and tried panning a sound. Nothing. I also ran my brand new A4 Mk2 through the external input (Y-cable from A4 L/R to Rytm Ext In) and couldn’t hear any stereo image in the chorus effect, where it should be very noticeable. Not through the headphone output, not through Overbridge. Disabling L or R in Overbridge muted the respective side, but the stereo image was nonexistent.

Could my Rytm unit be faulty or glitching out, or is there something I’m not understanding here? I’ve never tested the panning using a mixer and L/R outputs, but I’m going to do that before contacting support.

Thanks for any input on this matter.

EDIT: I tried hooking the L/R outputs to my audio interface, checked that the interface monitoring was set to stereo and tried to pan sounds. Nope. Tried running test mode from early startup menu. No errors. I guess I’ll have to file a ticket.

File a ticket. Sounds fishy.

Yeah, I did that.

It’s amazing how long I’ve been using the unit without actually realizing it’s not working as intended. We even recorded an album featuring a lot of the Rytm, but we used the individual outputs from Overbridge on mono tracks and did panning in the mix so the issue went unnoticed back then.

Let us know the outcome.
The AR sounds huge, even in mono :star_struck:

The support replied quickly. They advised me to do a factory reset, which I did, but it didn’t help. So today I’m contacting my retailer to discuss their return policy, and the unit will most probably be shipped to Sweden for warranty repairs.

It’s going to be lonely for a while without my trusted drum machine. But it means I’ve got more time to dive into the A4. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, my Rytm is finally on its way home. I had to return it through my retailer since they have their own warranty policies. They had some problems with their internal mail and the package was lost somewhere for over a week before they actually shipped it to Sweden.

But Elektron’s service was awesome. It only took a day for them to fix the unit and leave it to be shipped back. The support people were super friendly and helpful.

The problem was a bad solder that caused a short circuit in the outputs and it was fixed by simply resoldering.
