So easy to get things going with the Oxi. Love it. (Sequencing the Cycles in this clip).
I am looking for an answer to two questions/issues I have with Oxi and my current setup.
- When using the Grandmother for MIDI input, I get weird Pitch bend messages on Channel 2 that just turn everything into chaos. GM is set to channel 6 and these messages appear out of nowhere, looking at the MIDI monitoring. I checked all possible settings both on GM and Oxi to prevent this, but nothing seems to work. GM into Digitakt works fine and Sub 37 into Oxi also works fine…
- Might be a noob question. I use Model 12 as an audio interface for Ableton and record all my synths through it. Oxi is my master clock and I would like to sync Ableton and Oxi clock and transport, taking into account the Model 12 setup.
Just curious : how are you doing with the Oxi One? Does it fullfil your needs and expectations?
Nope sold it.
Also curious about the reason you sold it…
It’s a good kit. It just wasn’t for me, 's all.
Currently using my Roland piano as a controller now for Logic, and so far, it’s getting me closer to the results I want.
But man, it feels like I’m starting all over. And yet, I don’t wanna go back to hardware except for a decent controller, now that I’ve actually taken the leap. Gas is literally gone.
For now, I should say
Slightly OT:
That’s funny, because I’ve been slowly drifting that way with the Push 3 Standalone & Ableton I’ve got a little used ROLI Seaboard on my desk and my Nord next to me, and one or the other of those is a controller when I’m composing at my desk. The P3S ends up going in my lap in the evenings where I twiddle and do sound design.
I’m not yet at the stage where I’d give up all of my gear and go ITB— I can’t imagine dropping the OP-1 or the OP-1F — but a big box is going to my daughter, the next generation of electronic musicians in the family this weekend. And I am looking at the next pile of things asking myself what I could sell or give away.
So it’s good to know that someone else I respect is making the same shift at about the same time.
I have not used my Oxi enough yet to know whether it is a keeper or not — I really like what it does, but have not practiced it enough to be truly fluent. I keep thinking that that + my iPad and AUM could be a really good combination. Usually the OP-1F travels with me on trips now, but I’m thinking that the iPad & the Oxi may go in the bag when I next go somewhere to force me to really wrap my head around the idea. I really respect the company & what they’ve done with it, though. If you’re looking for a good sequencer, it’s a great piece of kit.
For what it’s worth, the OP-1 is going but the blackbox and tangerine stay
I should add, I appreciate that and I have the deepest gratitude and respect for you and your work, too.
Let’s explore this together. Both hardware gents, both fathers to daughters, slowly drifting into the box. I’m moving into Logic and among other things, what I’m noticing is, I’m starting to get fluent with the keyboard shortcuts now. Arming a track, trigger to record, undo, retake, record again, is as fast and similar as when I’m writing, so it’s starting to get familiar. Though the connection isn’t quite there, yet.
The main reason I got rid of the OXI is that it made my Perfourmer freeze up when using the generative sequencers. I imagine that there’s too much information coming from the OXI for the Perfourmer to handle. I have a motu midi interface that might be able to filter out the problem, but didn’t have the patience at the time to figure it out.
My tuppence, I’ve been messing around and finishing very little music for god knows how long. Bought shed loads of gear in that time but not much has stuck until now. This thing has been a real catalyst for me. Im banging out tracks and actually enjoying it. And Im finding myself swapping out synths / drum machines at a rate of knots to see how well they play with the sequencer. Bit of a game changer tbh.
that was fast
New tutorial available! Mainly improvements to the latest firmware 4.0: the main screen redesign and the pattern launch quantization options. Cheers!
I think the Oxi One needs a longer than normal honeymoon period, it can do so much. It takes months to discover all possibilities, I own mine a year now and I’m still learning. Also the firmware updates with new features follow up very fast. The developer(Manuel) is very responsive for feature requests on his Discord channel. I will never sell it.
I had the Oxi and sold it. But it’s great for so many things. Used multitrack with my tangerine to get good drum groves going. Used it with my modular and the LFOs. Used it with my keyboard. I like the Hapax a bit more but the form factor and battery power and possibilities are amazing.
I’m finding the Oxi One and SP-404 MK2 is a great combo. Really quick to build grooves, and can resample them with seamless looping with the 404’s End Snap feature. Just a bit more versatile and hands-on than the 404 pattern mode.
Yes turns out, Komplete Kontrol MK3 was more my thing. I’m a keyboard player after all, so it just made more sense.
Komplete Kontrol MK3 is not a sequencer is it?
It is not. I think there’s an arp in there somewhere, but I’ve never liked arps so I haven’t even tried to look for it, if it’s even there.
It’s tightly integrated will all apps that support Native Instrument’s NKS format, which is as close to a hardware synth experience I’ve come yet when working in Logic. Many other vendors support the format as well, though it’s a hit and miss affair on how they implement it. For now, I’ve just decided to use instruments that clearly outline proper NKS support and register within Native Access. There’s so many of them, that limitation alone isn’t much of a limitation anyway.
For fx and stuff, tho, it’s not particularly useful. I use mostly SoundGhost’s plugs now, my exploring led me to them and there’s something about their high quality, lo fi nature that reminds me of Chase Bliss gear. And for mixing and mastering, Logic’s onboard tools are excellent for my needs. But again, no native support for the Kontrol keyboard there.
Not really a problem, tho. Most of my time with Logic is spent playing, recording, stopping, undoing, playing and recording again, tweaking the instrument. The other stuff is maybe a tenth of what I do.
What is everyone’s preferred method of making 303-style sequences? I’m trying with my Dreadbox Hades Reissue:
- Oxi One CV1 (pitch) > Hades CV in
- Oxi CV2 (Velocity) > Hades VCF in, Hades VCA in
- Oxi Gate > Hades Gate in
I’ve tested a few sequencer modes so far:
-
Stochastic mode (v4.14) - Pretty good, but I’m unsure how to get a funky bassline going with slides. Also, it’s not very prescriptive as the mode would suggest. Interesting with the velocity and gate length pages but I’m not finding the sweet spots yet. In the CV settings, do I want velocity set to gated or not? I’m not understanding the difference.
-
Mono mode - doesn’t seem to offer slide, but maybe I’m missing it. Velocity and Gate pages are great though. Same question as above re: the velocity setting.
-
Matriceal mode - this was the one I was hoping would be the winner but I’m not wrapping my head around how to use it for 303 style sequences.
