Overbridge, OS upgrades and geriatric Macs

I know I sound like an insane person whenever I bring this up, but I’ve got a 2012 Macbook Pro that’s still running fine and is quite dependable. I’m not going above High Sierra for many reasons (being able to use 32-bit apps is one.)

Earlier today I realized that version 1.71 of the RYTM OS had been released, so I installed it on my unit (MKI), only for Overbridge (2.7.3) to stop working altogether. So I went and downloaded the latest version of OB, but it’s only compatible with Macs running Big Sur and newer. By some miracle I still had the SysEx file for RYTM OS 1.70, so I was able to revert back to that— I don’t know how I would have coped otherwise.

So… is this is it for people with older computers? Get a new one or stay behind? Is it really impossible to keep Overbridge compatible with older systems?

What’s the latest version of OB that would work on my computer, by the way? Not that I would know where to find older installers (edit: found the link for 2.8.4; that one doesn’t work with RYTM 1.71 either). Is there a version of OB I could install that also works with RYTM 1.71, or am I left in the dust until I finally get a new laptop?

Since the OS are continuously updating and changing base APIs there is a point where backwards compatibility costs too much in development overhead. Especially when squeezing features and performance out of older systems.

I think this is the biggest problem with using a Mac. I recently got a new one and then realised that my version of Ozone (v9) wasn’t supported under the current version of MacOS even though it was only a few years old, so I was forced to either update or stop using it. It can work both ways - if your computer is new and your software is old or vice versa and it can be very frustrating.

Hi Vestibule,

I also accidentally updated my RYTM firmware from 1.70 to 1.71 and now my Catalina Mac with Overbrige 2.7.9 won’t connect to it anymore. Do you have a link to the Analog-Rytm_MKII_OS1.70A.syx file ? I searched all my drives … and I think I have all of them except this one

Edit : From what I just read about legacy firmware in other discussions, I guess I will need to ask directly Elektron support for the 1.70 firmware. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I finally found my original file on the computer of the studio where I work. I probably did this update there at the time … so I’m pretty lucky. Even if I still have the highest regard for Elektron, I’m generally a little disappointed by the legacy software support and the lack of information related to it. My AR will stay with firmware 1.70 for a long time I guess ! And I will be more careful with updates in the future
