Hi all,
Since a few years ive got a Digitakt and I have grown to love the drum sounds on it.
Compared to a Roland TR8s I think you can create a nice beefy kick, great snappy snares and hi hats and so on.
Right now I`ve come to the point I want a different setup so my DT has to go but I have not found any drummachine that gives me the right drumsounds.
For example the TR8s sounds to thin and hollow for my taste.
The sequencer is not an important part anymore because of other gear. I like the sampling option but its not a dealbreaker.
Respectfully, the TR-8S is not thin or hollow. It is used by the likes of KINK, Mathew Jonson, Shawn Rudiman and countless modern producers because of the fatness of ACB. How do you have it hooked up? Maybe something’s wrong in the chain.
I hear you on the DTII, while sometimes I do use it for a full drum buss. I find the mid/high eq boost it has suits snare, clap, hats, stabs & lead samples better without eq correction.
If you can find a Pioneer/Dave Smith/Toraiz SP-16 second-hand that might do the trick for you? I love mine comes with Prophet 6 drive HPF/LPF and resonance filters too
I bought mine after production stopped for 1100AUD/700USD if it means anything, but I am a patient buyer.
P.S. I feel you on Roland, I have a TR-8 and TB-3. Never use either cheap plastic junk. Scatter is rubbish. Uninspiring. So disappointing. A decent metal box and knobs w/analog drive and maybe a filter they would have cleaned up. The SP-16 on the other hand is built like a tank and exceeds expectations (even more heft than Elektron).
Have you cranked up the kit level to +10db?
Do you have comp+drive on kick and snare, saturator on everything else?
Do you have compressor on master fx?
Have you set accents? With accent level over 80?
Are you actually mixing the drum sounds, or do you just have all the faders at max?
Are you running it in mono?
Are you slamming your mixer?
Good question
It does fit the needs but I`m going in a direction with a different sequencer and other gear instead of using the DT as a sequencer and drums.
So the DT is a little bit too much in the new setup.
I would say you have tons of options. Obviously Digitakt is just a sampler.
So first decide if you want Roland classic sound or not. Because you can pay a LOT of money and be miles away from x0x and if that is what you are after, then look into Roland machine (choose your form factor according to what you need).
If you are happy to try out stuff, these are machines I own and are absolutely great, each one of them
DSI Tempest - great overall sound quality, forces you to learn sound synthesis and can be a 6 voice synth too
Analog Rhytm MK2 - Absolute boss on the market, with features and sound
Jomox Alpha Base - classic analogue thickness
MFB Tanzbar - mk1, absolute beast of a machine
Erica Synths Perkons - hybrid niche machine. You can load your samples now too, but it is a lot about sound design with this one.
Digitone - FM synthesis is underrated
Other suggestions : LRX02, Volca Drum, Korg Electribe(s) etc etc
