OT Sample management confusion re: Merlin's guide

I’ve been writing a lot using the OT as part of my current setup.

I recently re-read Merlin’s guide to the OT and I’m still confused about a description of sample management in the document.

Hopefully someone can clear it up for me?

"3.2 Advantages of the sample slot list
Flexibility The same sample can be put multiple times in the list. This allows for handling the same sample in completely different ways. For example: put some kind of loop in slot1 and slice it to 16 slices. Now select the same sample and put it in slot2. You can now slice it up to 64 slices, choose different start and end points, etc. Load the same sample in slot 3 and you can again make different choices. You have now defined 3 different ways of handling the same sample."

I read this to mean eg:
– I could select ‘sample 1’ assign it to flex machine 1 and slice it into 16 slices.
– Select the same sample, assign it to flex machine 2 and slice it into 8 slices.

When I try this the same sample it referred to with the slices associated to it. The only way I can achieve this is to ‘save a copy’ from the sample editor and work on a duplicate.

Am I just being dumb?

Each Sample, e.g. Flex001 has its Slice settings etc, regardless of the machine you assign it to.

Changing Flex001 is changing Flex001, regardless of whether you are doing it on Track 01, Track 02 or Track 07, you’re still changing Flex001…

Put LoopyLoop.wav in Flex001 and slice it to 16 slices.
Now Put LoopyLoop.wav in Flex002 and slice it to 64 slices.

So both are using the same audio file LoopyLoop.wav but are using different slice information as they are in different slots.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, how you describe it is how I understood it but when I try what you describe it always changes the slices associated to the sample.

How are you applying the slices to the sample when they are associated with the flex machine?

I’m currently just holding the ‘track button’ and pressing edit

In that example, Merlin is talking about assigning the same sample to sample slot one and two, not flex machine one and two.

Ah ok that makes sense then, it’s just having another instance of the sample in ram. Thanks
