OP-XY/Z User Thread

I think % is one of the conditions in the step components but forget which

yea its a pity. would really like some control over the % of randomness

This came up on the TE discord the other day, someone suggested it would be really handy if you could press the 0 accidental key multiple times to cycle through different probabilities when programming in one of these step components, maybe in 15-20% increments.

big time. that’d be really good.

There are skip triggers, skip param lock or skip step component which can be set for every N times, last two suppose to be used in combinations.

Email worked for me. Just a heads up.

I said something like “Hey I just missed the $1499 sale, is there any chance you could honor it?”

I mean it shouldn’t matter. But I got my OPXY so it’s worth a shot just like that for anyone still trying to get one.

Did you suggest this to support@teenageengineering.com? A brilliant idea.

I think someone else already has, it wasn’t my idea. I already sent them a pretty long list of feature requests but will add this one on if I send them another round at some point. But I implore you to send one too, the more people that ask for simple stuff like this, the more likely it is they will prioritize it.

Well that’s a good sign! Seems bizarre that mk4 would take a step back in that way. I haven’t tested yet but will this wknd (especially if you guys remind me)

Been thinking about the synth engines more and wondering why they are a bit behind similar portable devices which have fantastic instruments, like seqtrak and even the roland mc101, which has basically a JV 4x partial engine inside and 64 partial polyphony. I realise companies like Roland, yamaha etc are renown for their synthesizers and have always been ‘sound quality’ first, whereas TE is more design and UI led. Just wondering if it is hardware limitations or an intention of the software development side. Maybe software synth design at Roland level is still closely guarded knowledge and it’s just not possible for a younger company to catch up.

Don’t mean to talk down TE or the device, I think they’ve done a fantastic job with it.

Products of Yamaha and Roland are based on custom chips that are very powerful and are used in many product lines. Only the really big players can afford such an investment. Small companies like TE have to take what the market offers.

Especially with the OP-XY, I think that many limitations are due to its extremely compact design. For its size, I find the OP-XY incredibly powerful.

The M8 has way way better synths, partly because it has Braids, but also the FM and wavetable synths are excellent. The FM especially, because it uses all the waves from the wavetable as oscillators.

The XY’s synths are barely good enough. I use samples for pretty much everything. Or I hook up my K2, which is great with the XY’s reverb and delay.

The M8 has to deliver 8 voices, the OP-XY 24 voices.

Apart from that, it’s a big mess if you want to work polyphonically with the M8. Thats my main reason why I like the approach taken by TE much more. If I want more complex sounds with the XY, I either layer tracks or use multis. Or both

I agree the synths on the M8 are way better. Still, I’d rather have the OP-XY as I have made 20x the amount of music on that in the same time that I owned the M8. But it’s all about taste of workflow of course. I would really enjoy it if they gave us a drum synth + another fm or subtractive synth.

I must be the only one who prefers the OP-XY sounds to the M8’s, which generally all sound very “chiptune” to me. Anyway, and this is true, I find the OP-XY’s stock sounds (as well as the song demos) terrible. I think many of you who say the M8 sounds better also do so because there’s an amazing community behind it making INCREDIBLE preset packs.

I prefer the sound of the XY’s synths to the m8’s, :100:%. I wish we had more control over em tho.

I just get the impression that they’re going for a syntakt style concept where you only get a few parameters and even less modulation than syntakt gives you so you have to get pretty creative with sound design to achieve things that are pretty easy on a synth with an actual mod matrix and lots of params.

They really don’t though. There are a ton of presets in the m8 that can do about any genre you want. The M8 is based on a chiptune tracker so the real wizards of that machine were tracker scene guys at first. That has changed, it’s being used for about any genre you can think of. It’s insanely powerful for sample based tunes. For synths, Go listen to Ess track he did with the FM synths. It sounds like a very modern jam one would make on an elektron machine.

That said I look at the m8 as a mono synth source and typically sample the polyphony. I was going to do a similar thing with the opxy and just send the midi out to better synths. With the m8 I just play them and sample them in.

But the m8 has really come into its own as a workstation that you can make anything on now. It’s not even grid locked at all so you can make all kinds of hip hop grooves with it.

The challenge is it takes longer to get up to speed with it. Even if you have been producing for years it is still going to take some time to learn all the commands and potential of it. But since it really is good as a muscle memory box. Once you learn it, it stays with you. So that’s a major positive.

my people, do we need to do the M8 vs OP-XY synth measuring contest again. theres a whole thread for this. the two boxes really arent that similar to begin with

People who love the M8/trackers are very insistent that others just aren’t getting it.
