Wanted to order op1 Field for reduced price to connect with Op-xy … but ordered a elz1 play because cheaper and more synth engines. I thought also some overlap would be with a op1 field.
Want to keep my jam setup as compact as possible: Op-xy + elz1 play + tempera. And I still got my ipad pro and linnstrument.
I’m currently looking into the OP–XY and wondering how flexible it is for mixing individual tracks. I know level and pan per track are possible, but I’m particularly interested in whether it supports EQing each track separately — either internally or via external gear.
Ideally, I’d like to connect the OP–XY via USB to a mixer and route each track to its own channel strip, so I can handle EQ, levels, and FX sends externally. I’ve seen mention of a 12-channel USB mode, but I’m not sure if that means I can send each track to a separate channel on a USB mixer — or if that would require a computer in between.
Has anyone set up a workflow like this? Or found good ways to EQ individual tracks, either on the device or through routing?
Appreciate any insights — this would really help me decide whether to go for it!
Not sure if I got your point exactly, but right now the OP-XY only sends out a stereo signal over USB.
I also don’t know if it will ever be possible to access individual tracks over USB. Teenage Engineering would probably be the best source to answer whether that’s technically feasible.
There is no 12-channel USB mode, you’re probably thinking of the TX-6. It’s a feature a lot of people hope for from the XY but it is unknown if that’s even possible.
The XY’s mixer is really nice but it really wouldn’t be useful for mixing anything beyond its own voices plus at most one single external input.
Two filters actually, you get the multi-mod filter as well as a high pass filter on each track in the track settings. I would say the mixing capabilities of the XY are about as minimal as it gets though, you really can’t do what you’re wanting to use it for.
I just got a tx-6 a few days ago, so I wouldn’t complain if TE would get the OP-XY and tx-6 to work together in a cool way. But I don’t see it happening, tbh. Only 6 tracks on the tx-6 vs. 8 on the OP-XY. Maybe it would be possible to somehow cram tracks together, so one fader on the tx-6 would control two tracks on the OP-XY, kinda like it works with the dual mono input function. But still, the tx-6 only has one USB socket, so even if it would be possible to stream individual tracks from the OP-XY to the tx-6, there wouldn’t be a way to record them individually anyway.
Currently, I’m using the main out of the OP-XY to send audio to one of the tracks on tx-6, while another tx-6 track receives audio from the OP-XYs secondary audio output. That’s already pretty flexible. Two tracks on the OP-XY are set up to trigger the internal drum machine on the tx-6 via BLE midi, so I’ve got a dedicated kick track and a dedicated snare track. Good fun so far, but the drum sounds on the tx-6 are not velocity sensitive, so I’m not sure if that’s suitable for me in the long run.
Could be like pages, take the XY, there’s more than 8 tracks really, we have the 8 instruments, tape, FX tracks, etc.
Could take 4 or 5 faders and use these in a paged fashion, other buttons on the TX-6 let you switch through the selected tracks, so instruments 1-4, then 5-8, then aux tracks, etc. Then the other fader could be master.
I dont see why the TX-6 couldn’t record more than 6 simultaneous tracks either from the XY. Maybe this will come in time. I think they’re really missing a trick though, the best way I heard it described was maybe earlier in this thread where using the TP-7 or TX-6 and a Field or XY would be like 1 + 1 = 3. It’s called their Field System, but none of the devices really have any special functionality when used with the others. Doesn’t make much sense to me.
But how would this work? Currently, the tx-6 can only record the master stereo output to a USB-Stick when used stand-alone. Even when you sample into it, the samples have to be backed up to a USB-Stick. Otherwise, they are lost when you switch it off. So there seems to be no or very limited internal memory on the tx-6.
The tx-6 and tp-7 do have some extra functions when used together: You can multi-track record all inputs from the tx-6 to the tp-7 or mix multi-track files from the tp-7 with the tx-6 when connecting them via USB.
But I agree, there seems to be little added value if you choose to invest in their whole field system.
On the other hand, all the field stuff is pretty flexible and controllable via midi, so it potentially works well with any other (usb) midi gear.
I’ve run into what seems to be a new bug in firmware 1.40 involving the arpeggiator’s hold function (hand icon) on the punch-in effects track when the arranger is used. After upgrading from 1.38, the issue unfortunately broke a live-performance project that previously worked flawlessly.
Steps to reproduce
On the punch-in effects track, enable the arpeggiator and sequence one punch-in effect on step 1 of Pattern 1.
Clone Pattern 1 to create Pattern 2, then activate Arpeggiator Hold (the hand icon turns black).
In the Arranger, alternate the patterns – 1-2-1-2-1-2 …
→ Result: The punch-in effect correctly toggles between held and non-held states when switching patterns
Clone Pattern 2 to create Pattern 3 (Arpeggiator hold still on). Add a second punch-in effect to step 1.
Arrange the patterns in a sequence such as 1-2-1-3-1-1-1-2-2-2 …
Observed behavior:
Once Pattern 3 plays, both punch-in effects remain latched indefinitely – even when subsequent patterns have Arpeggiator Hold turned off.
This “infinite hold” did not occur in firmware 1.38 and makes it impossible to disengage the effects during performance.
Hey all,
I’m working on a new OP–XY sound pack with a twist: each preset comes in multiple versions, tuned to different musical scales — like major, minor, Dorian, Phrygian, and major/minor pentatonic.
Anyways if you want to mess around with a piano preset, here you go.
Not sure which of the 2 OPXY topics to post this, but anyway…
I just released the Cinematic Pads Sound Pack.
A unique sound pack for the Teenage Engineering OPXY featuring cinematic, evolving, lush and characterful pad sounds available via my payhip or gumroad page
Cinematic Pads contains 50 multi sampled instruments and as with all of my sound packs all the source wave files are heavily optimized. This enables you to use all 8 multi sample engines of the OPXY with these patches simultaneously without the XY running out of memory resulting in patches not loading.
All Patches are crafted with great care using customised (multi) samples so these are not just simple presets, but custom sounds which you can use for your ambient, cinematic, drone or all other kinds of electronic music.
In below video you can listen to a simple patch play through of the Cinematic Pads sound pack:
The Cinematic Pads Sound Pack is Inspired (but not the same) by my previous ‘OP-1 Field Path’ sound pack which I now also made compatible with the OPXY. So If you previously purchased the Field Path Sound Pack for the OP-1 Field or the complete OP-1 Field Bundle you can re-download the ‘OP-1 Field Path’ Sound Pack for free using your previous receipt and download link and also use the patches of the Field Path Sound Pack on your OPXY!
Hello thanks for that I’ll try later in the week
Just got my op xy
Does the op xy have a scale mode yet or do u have to use the brain feature afterwards
Thing of getting the Roland j6 to help me out
I have zero knowledge on scales and chords
I used cthlu vst back in the day when using a bitwig 1.0
