All you need is a 909 kick and a mixer you can overdrive the gain/signal level on (mackies were the best for this).
You can do it with distortion pedals but they are not necessary.
Keep your eye on the Xmas track competition, I’m posting a Gabber track in a few days using a TR-8, Digitakt and TB03. All the distortion on my track will come from the mixer’s gain and level settings.
Essentially, you push the signal into distortion until it becomes a square wave, giving it that specific sound.
Also, yes, you can do it with a MD.
Deffo can do this with a MD and some 909 hat samples wish electron made a modern version
mkay been looking for that sound so much, through the years I have bought 6 distortion pedals, I know I can get it fast and easy with some plugin but I don’t use pc anymore, in fact hate it, love hardware, will try with Big muff and Rat, I love the Rat for my TB!
My MD is mk1 so no samples, I routed once my kick of TR8 indiv out to Big muff and other dist. but it wasn’t that great, I had far more decent result with oldskool machines like the TR505 or the monotribe percs or Alesis hr16 in combo with distortion. I know about the Overdrive trick on especially old mixers, going to try with my 15year old crackling behringer mixer. I have now a Presonus AR22 just to connect most of my shit and record on SD, then to mp3 or wav to check in my car if I like it
The problem with a lot of fuzz and distortion pedals is that they take out a lot of the low end thump, leaving you with quite a thin sound. Dont think that you need to have everything set at 11 either. I usually have my kick at about 50% volume on the TR-8, but that varies depending on the exact sound I’m after.
yes that’s what I have experienced a lot with most dist., been looking to modify/circuitbend some pedals… but it’s true TR8 sound very loud comparing with MD for example. _Same with Minibrute sliders need to be around 60 or 70% to not distort on it’s own and most pedals have that shitty range where it’s starts to hiss and give to much extra noise!
I’ve used a DS1 before on kicks, but only quite lightly. You can get a pretty nice filter sweep sound out of it but it’s not got the widest sweet spot.
yeah DS1 is an iconic, almost cult pedal, oh going to try with my old Electribe Emx1 audio input (always used it with television, newsspeakers, voices or recordings on my old minidisc and the grain delay ahaha so much fun, or maybe put kicks into my ESP of MS20… going to write al my ideas down and ‘experimenting’ in the weekend. ah damn remembers me of the old Izotope ozone which I used only for distorting hehe
I haven’t owned a MD for years but I had banging. 909 distortion kicks using the efm machine? That is what the 909 kick is imho digital of anlouge no one knows the difference if your a purist buy a jomox mbase
Overdrive pedal would be better. Distortion is too heavy handed.
Bass overdrive does the job nicely.
Mainly clipping from driving cheap mixer inputs too hard as mentioned above.
A lot of that is also digital clipping from increasing sample level way beyond normalization.
The yellow boss pedals might be to much. Also they are made for the use with guitars and their frequency band which is rather narrow and has very little bass. I find that the pedals do sound good when you cut the low frequencies on kicks (doh!). But, as mentioned, a mixer preamp from an analog console can produced this sound very well. The dutch used the mackie mixers a lot. You could also chain several channels if you have seperate outputs for each channel. This whole technique brings a lot of overtones but also a lot of mids which make the mix rather muddy so I would advice to have a eq at the end to tame the sound.
Thumbs-Up for Jomox!
But the good thing about the Boss pedals is that their schematics are widely available.
On older pedals with through hole boards it‘s very nice to bring back in the bass by replacing one capacitor.
Nice info!
I have the bass big muff and it has a mode where you can blend the dry and wet signal. Works very well on kicks for me and it’s not too expensive.
Remember my mackie 1604 getting used by some french hardtek boys who were all over this overdriving the kick. Many yrs ago.
It’s coming back mate, all Roland have to do is release a boutique Alpha Juno next year and we’re gonna be in hardcore heaven. Them Mackie desks are gonna go through the roof in value.
Hope so mines is gathering dust in attic…lol
thx for all the info guys, really helpful!
