Which ones if we think sound?
Not sure what you are askingā¦
The old ones, pre tube? The tube? Or the new ones?
They all have a pretty usable sound. Depends on what you do with them.
Digitakt
The tube ones vs new ones.
I think all the electribes sound good enough to use in a track, but the new electribes suffer voice stealing quite easily, so even though they have 16 tracks it is not really realistic to expect to be able to use more than 8-12 simultaneously without drop outs.
This is ānewā one (electribe 2, not sampler): https://hearthis.at/theostomp/cleanst8/
Overall, cleaner than the tube ones.
Was looking at Electribe sampler2, but having Octatrack, wouldn t make more sense Electribe2 instead?
Am I loosing anything?
Thanks!
I had an E2 sampler, it was a real pain in the arse compared to the Digitakt I have now.
I think you can probably do better tbh.
Yeah, donāt go for the new sampler Tribe. Thereās just no reason, compared to other samplers both old and new.
I just felt there is an immediacy in the workflow⦠Am I wrong?
Should I go then for the Electribe 2 synth version?
I have an E2 synth and think it is pretty good.
It pairs well with both the OT and the A4 and can give both those Elektron boxes tempo per pattern functionality when used as master clock (but use the OT/A4 for program changes).
Also, IMHO I think it is a better fifth voice for the A4 as opposed to going the CV route.
Iāve looked at the new Electribes often but have heard about a lot of bugs that arenāt being addressed. Can any owners chime in on the following:
- high pitched sound present in the upper khz area (some say when using āAudio inā, some say always)
- noticeable audio gap when switching patterns
I paid attention to the forums for the first two years to see if these issues were fixed but gave up looking after awhile. The OT is taking care of most of the things I would use an E2 or ES2 for but I considered to get one as a cheaper, āon the roadā companion versus taking my much more expensive OT with me.
Donāt know about the E2 sampler, but on the E2 synth I have never experienced any extraneos noises and I donāt notice any gaps when I switch the patterns I make.
I also think the claims of note stealing are slightly exagerated. It is easily possible to maintain 12 audio tracks and then use the remaining four tracks to sequence other hardware.
The available polyphony of the E2 easily matches the polyphony of Elektron boxes with the possible exception of the MD.
E2s sample management is terrible, skip it! Plus iirc it doesnāt have the more interesting filters.
I enjoyed my E2 tbh, probably shouldāve kept it. Itās a great little extra box, I used it a lot for short percussive and noisy synth sounds.
I liked it tbh. Itās not amazing but it pairs really nice with a āmainā piece like an octatrack or something else.
Itās is pretty basic but super immediate, and sounds good imo.
Great to come up with quick ideas to sample into an octatrack imo.
I hate being that guy, but having owned the E2 synth I must admit that the Ipad App Grooverider does the same and more, while looking exactly the same and sounding as goodā¦
Yes to both. High pitch present and audio gap when switching patterns.
You can work around it but neither should be there.
I owned one for just under a year before selling it and I couldnāt get on with it mostly because of the way the menu is structured which must have been designed by a hyperactive squirrel. (and forgot to mention the sample management is not great either as already mentioned in posts above - I bought an app to help but still a drag)
I replaced it with a DT and though some features on the E2S could be said to be āmore completeā with an SD card slot and stereo tracks / samples (probably a few more important features that I cannot remember) I feel that the DT is a better machine. Itās far more immediate.
Oh and one more thing about the E2S ⦠it has a light show gimmick under the unit that is probably only useful in a christmas tree decoration type situation.
There are a ton of Youtube videos which show what is possible just using an E2.
One example from a guy who has posted many other E2 only tunes:
Some things about the E2s workflow are really good, and I always found the pads really playable, even for melodic parts.
But⦠I really had a lot of problems with the sampler version.
-Sample management and editing is horrible. Really horrible.
-You canāt nudge beats. You might notice that every demo is a rigid house-y beat. There are some swing templates, but you canāt change them at all.
-The synth engine sounds OK but vanilla. In the sampler version, they remove a lot of the synth features, so you only get a limited range of filters etc. Very limited synth.
So maybe getting the synth version as a kind of expansion module is OK, if you know that it can make the sound you want. As a sampler, the DT is much preferable imho.
Really great music clip!!!
Iām so happy to see this topic!
I was researching cheap synths/grooveboxes for a buddy of mine to get into making/performing electronic music- I did a bit of research into the E2 and I was like āthis thing is killerā
I found a used one from Guitar center for $200 and am getting it shipped to Boston to pick up on my vacation! Plan to do a little park composing with it!
