Dear Elektron Support Team,
I am contacting you regarding a serious issue with my Elektron Octatrack MKII. I would appreciate your assistance in identifying the cause and determining the correct solution before purchasing replacement parts or attempting a firmware update.
Device information:
- Model: Elektron Octatrack MKII
- Purchased approximately three years ago
- The operating system has never been updated since purchase
- The device was working normally until a few days ago
1. Description of the problem
When I switch on the Octatrack, the LEDs illuminate briefly during startup. The TAP TEMPO LED flashes approximately 8–9 times and then stops.
The display shows the normal main screen, including the sample machine interface and a tempo of 120 BPM.
However, the device becomes completely unresponsive in normal operating mode.
None of the buttons or controls appear to work, including PLAY, STOP, BANK, TAP TEMPO, and FUNC + PROJECT. I cannot navigate the menus, load projects, or operate the sequencer.
The screen remains on, but the instrument does not respond to user input.
2. Early Startup Menu and diagnostic tests
I switched off the device and restarted it while holding the FUNCTION button.
The Early Startup Menu opened successfully and displayed the following options:
- TEST MODE
- EMPTY RESET
- MIDI UPGRADE
- SEND UPGRADE
- EXIT
I entered TEST MODE using TRIG 1.
The diagnostic screen displayed the following information:
- DRAM: [*]
- SRAM: [*]
- USB ULPI: [OK]
- ATA: [NO INT]
- RTC: [OK]
- CODEC: [OK]
- DSP: C0 [OK], C1 [OK]
- BATTERY: [OK]
I am particularly interested in whether “ATA: [NO INT]” indicates a problem with the CompactFlash interface or whether this is normal for the diagnostic test.
3. Button, encoder, display, and LED tests
In TEST MODE, the physical controls appear to respond correctly.
I tested multiple buttons, including BANK, PLAY, STOP, FUNCTION, and PAGE. Pressing them produces corresponding LED responses.
Rotating the LEVEL encoder also changes the LED indications.
Pressing different TRIG buttons activates various display and LED tests. For example, TRIG 1 produces a white display, while other TRIG buttons activate different LED colors or return the display to the diagnostic screen.
This suggests that the front-panel buttons, encoder, LEDs, and display are at least partially functional in diagnostic mode.
However, none of these controls respond during normal operation.
4. Reset attempts
I performed EMPTY RESET from the Early Startup Menu at least twice.
Unfortunately, this did not resolve the problem.
After restarting, the device still displays its normal main screen but remains completely unresponsive.
I have not formatted the CompactFlash card.
5. Additional troubleshooting
I also performed the following checks:
- Powered off the device, waited, and restarted it several times.
- Disconnected all MIDI cables and tried starting the Octatrack without any MIDI connections.
- Tested the device with its original power supply.
- Tried another power supply during troubleshooting, but the symptoms remained unchanged.
- Connected the Octatrack to a computer via USB, but it was not detected. However, I could not enable USB Disk Mode because the device was unresponsive.
None of these attempts resolved the issue.
6. CompactFlash card investigation
I suspected that the CompactFlash card might be damaged.
I removed the card while the Octatrack was powered off and then switched the device on without it.
The display showed:
“INSERT COMPACT FLASH CARD”
The device could not proceed into normal operation without the card.
I then reinserted the original CompactFlash card, but the original freezing problem remained.
To investigate further, I purchased a UGREEN 50541 USB CompactFlash card reader.
I connected the reader to both a Windows computer and a MacBook.
The reader successfully recognizes and reads a memory card from my camera. The card appears normally, and I can access its files.
However, when I remove the camera card and insert the Octatrack’s CompactFlash card into the same reader, the Octatrack card is not detected as a disk.
On the MacBook, I also checked Disk Utility with “Show All Devices” enabled.
The camera card appeared in Disk Utility, but the Octatrack’s CompactFlash card did not appear at all.
I removed and reinserted the Octatrack card and repeated the test, with the same result.
This makes me strongly suspect that the original CompactFlash card has failed, although I understand that further testing may be necessary to confirm this.
7. My questions
Could you please advise on the following?
- Can a defective or unreadable CompactFlash card cause the Octatrack MKII to freeze on its main screen and stop responding to all buttons?
- Based on the diagnostic results, particularly “ATA: [NO INT]”, is there any indication of an internal hardware problem or a CompactFlash interface failure?
- If I purchase a new, empty CompactFlash card, should the Octatrack MKII be able to start and operate normally after the card has been properly initialized?
- What exact CompactFlash card specifications do you officially recommend for the Octatrack MKII? I am considering a 16 GB or 32 GB card and would appreciate guidance on compatibility, speed, and supported card types.
- Does a replacement CompactFlash card need any Elektron system files or factory content copied onto it before the Octatrack can operate?
- Is an operating system reinstall or update necessary in this situation? If so, what is the safest procedure when the normal operating interface is unresponsive?
- Would you recommend testing with a replacement CompactFlash card first, or is there another diagnostic procedure we should perform before purchasing one?
Additional information
I do not need to recover any personal projects or samples from the original CompactFlash card. I am happy to start with a completely new card and restore any necessary factory content.
My priority is to get the Octatrack MKII working normally again and to determine whether the problem is caused by the CompactFlash card, the operating system, or the hardware.
I can provide photographs of the diagnostic screen and a video demonstrating the startup behavior and unresponsive controls if needed.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I look forward to your technical recommendations.
Best regards,
Richard Madlenyan
