I made a flow chart today of my new proposed setup (including a couple bits I don’t have yet) because i managed to create some horrible feedback loop with another trial setup that left me with no MIDI sequencer notes outputing on a project. Not sure if it was a loop or CC#61 messages that did it … but It hasn’t affected other project thank goodness.
Does anyone care to look over this map to forsee any issues?
My main worry is (in red) … I’ve never had the Octatrack send MIDI feedback to the FaderFox MIDI Controllers before AND I’ll need to send CC#61 messages after every bank change live. I worry the DIGITAKT>JP-08>SH-01 chain is going to cop all that traffic and freak out, even if that chain has CC Receive set to ‘off’.
Yeah obviously the red midi connection creates a midi loop.
It is possible to plug a midi cable between OT midi in and out, in order to control audio tracks with midi tracks. No problem as long as audio tracks and midi tracks share the same channel.
In your case, you can’t use that propriety because in that case you can’t send midi data with audio tracks.
15.2 HOW MIDI IS ROUTED If an audio track and a MIDI track share the same MIDI channel, the MIDI track will block the audio track from sending out data while the audio track will block the MIDI track from receiving data.
Do you use OT midi tracks to control other gear? More details about what is sent?
A midi processor just before OT in would filter and solve your problem.
haha! … yeah, my ‘live’ setup removes the Keystep & Merge box, but I though I’d post the ‘Home’ setup.
thanks for chiming in! i feel like I’m using the OT pretty basically…
On the OT… i use the 8 Audio tracks (set to MIDI 1-8 )
Then two MIDI Tracks sequencing the two Synths set to MIDI 9 + 10
Those two really just sequence notes, pitch bend, lfo.
(OH and I send patch/bank changes messages from the OT to the JP & SH)
Then the Auto Channel set to MIDI 11
The Digitakt simply takes a clock, nothing else.
So the Fader Foxes should be sending/receiving CC#'s in relation to MIDI 1-8 on the OT
Any midi gear with midi filtering. The iconnnectmidi things can be used as merger and filter…
Maybe another way if you deactivate Faderfox controllers THRU and merge them, it would stop the midi loop. I don’t think you need the merger for the keystep.
OT > THRU box OUT 1 > UC4
THRU box OUT 2 > EC4
Maybe you can also use Roland’s Thru if you don’t have enough outputs…
I’m actually struggling to think what exactly I’d need to filter. … perhaps stop everything other than MIDI channels 1-8?
OK This way though, I think I’d need a 3 OUT thru box as I gotta go out to the Digitakt too. (and my MIDI solutions Merge Box would loose power as Faderfoxes don;t supply power over MIDI
will do, thanks! I might weigh it up with the MIO2 2in 2out on the basis i gotta keep the weight and size down for travelling … kinda why i like the MIDI solutions stuff, as it’s small, light and have the possibility of not requiring another plug on my powerboard
I’m having a similar issue with a feedback loop interfering with the arpeggiator on my sub 37 when in/out is set to the same channel so I can record midi notes from the sub37.
Im using merge and thru boxes by Camola. I’m not sure if they do any filtering. It’s not mentioned anywhere.
The main issue might be that sub37 doesn’t seem to have a way to stop sending arp notes. As a result, it records the arpeggiator notes, not the notes I’m holding down to play the arp. I think the feedback loop happens when OT plays Sub37…the arp notes are maybe send back to OT and result into notes that are cut short….?
I can use my midi controller set to auto and record parts that way, but I’d rather keep it more streamlined and be able to play parts in with sub37.
The thru is running MIDI out from OT….the thru port on OT is still open, so I will try to use that next. Doesn’t totally make sense why that would work but it’s one of the last things I can think of.
