Octatrack goes mobile with friends

Hello,
i still love my OT MK1, and my wish was to get it mobile and have fun with friends. Here is my solution:

The OP-Z is synced with the OT via Midi, the OT does the mixing-job, the Doepfer Pocket Dial ist programmed to edit the parameters of the OT, the main mix is send to the headphone-amp, and voila, with 4 headphones you can have fun whereever you like to.
I love surfing real waves (sailing), but audiowaves are fun to, so may first goal was to use 12 Volts from the batteries of the boat. Problem: the OT needs 6 Volts, the Doepfer uses 9V, the headphone-amp 12 Volts.
Solution: 2 DC converters left of the OP-Z under the USB-cable.

These converters are cheap but reliable and work flawlessly. I checked on the power consumption, the whole setup needs just 500 mA at 12 Volts. So car- or shipbatteries promise almost endless fun.

But you can use a normal LiPo Accu to. The one i use is quite old, had a capacity of 2100 mAh, which results, due to his age, in 3 hours of fun.

And when 220 Volts are available, i just connect an 12V power-supply from an old router.

Interessting thing is, this setup works absolutly stable till the voltage drops under 8 volts. Then the OT shows interesting patterns on the display and stops working. Time for charging!

Hope this is interesting for some of you, i learned a lot out of this forum, thanks for all the input of all of you, greetings from Berlin, Micha

Right, thats why boats are better :grimacing:

@Micha can you tell a bit about the last image with the battery / adapter / xlr cable(?). Confused about how you switch.

Hi, its just a classic 12V connector, like these

I just plug in the power supply i want to use, the accu will get one of these to, i used an adapter for that.
Hope this helps, let me know

If you need a circuit diagram, i can post that in the evening, greetings…

Thanks! And the third cable is a 12V car plug I assume?
Makes more sense now for me :ok_hand:

Yes, i get the idea, but then … slave of an OS again, aaaaand: no cables, i love the haptics of these electric snakes, plugging them in, pulling them out, i feel more connneted with handling them. Do i sound oldschool? Definitly!

Your avatar demonstrates it !
Went modular ?

I am old school and prefer midi din cables !

I have very interesting iOS apps but I can’t make music with iPad or iPhone without restraint. That said it works very well with Digis…

No, not really. I just wanted to get away from computer, so i needed Hardware, midi sequencing, thats why i touched ground with elektron, took me some time to get a grip on the OT, learned a lot from you, thx for that

Be careful not inserting them (that kind) powered into a socket! If the positive center shorts the socket bad things can happen. A colleague recently fried an industrial PC that way and delayed a project we had a tight schedule on.

Nice and portable build otherwise

Related, and also because this thread revived an outstanding desire I had lurking.

Already have some Birdcords for my Elektron devices, but was missing some for the non-Elektron friends.

So I ordered a USBC to 15V cable via Ali Express. Cheap, but decent quality. Works well for my modular case ( TipTop Zeus power supply ). Just replaced the normal power cable with the USBC to 15V one, and works like a charm.

The USBC is plugged in to a Ugreen 20000mah power bank ( with PD ). Paid €6.5 and started with one cable to test.

I can’t stand making music on app that’s something I finally discovered about myself. Some are very good though, it’s just not for me.

Too much screen time already at work probably.

I recently bought a Philips 20000mah for 17€. Ali Express cable USB C to 12v 5.5x2.5 center positive.
1.75 A output.

Hardware all the way for me too.
I have an iPad (gift) and great apps but no appeal for it. Only with Digitone 2 (usb audio and midi works like a charm, except USB EXT -12db shit).

When i’m out there for acoustic explorations, visual stimulus distracts me from diving deep into the sound, its not by accident, that i close my eyes when on my way to a sweetspot.
Dont get me wrong, editing audio visualy ist absolutly great, but it pulls your attention away from the ears, thats why i like hardware and jamming in dimmed light conditions … till i have to hit the next button
