Obscure Semi Modulars

Double Helix 🫠

This thread has me wondering - what semimodulars were around between the 2600, easel and MS 20 and the 2015-present era? Is there some cool 90s thing we’re sleeping on?

A neat almost semimodular is the NLC Null A 2:

You would need to get someone to build you one and stick it in a pod case, but it has some neat default routings and features. If offered as a pre built system it’d make a nice counterpart or alternative to the 0-Coast.

See upthread, but there were various MFB variations on the Kraftzwerg in the 00s for starters:

Not sure what there was available in the '90s off the top of my head other than the Synton Fenix:

I can’t recall any from the 90s—semimods were decidedly out of fashion then—but I remember the Analogue Systems Spawn from the early 2000s. Rack-mounted semi-modular that was surprisingly affordable compared to their other offerings. I daydreamed about getting one for a while, but decided against it after learning about the Nord Modular.

At the time it was hard to justify a single-oscillator monosynth to myself when the NM had as many oscillators as the DSP could handle, and polyphony. Now, of course, I own a bunch of analog monosynths. Times change.

Oh! And the Cwejman S1, which was (given that it was a Cwejman) unsurprisingly quite expensive. So expensive I never dreamed about owning it, but it sure did look pretty.

Evenfall Mini Modular is another, apparently designed by Grant Richter of Wiard… apparently there are only like 60 or so in existance.

can’t seem to find any demos of the sound, except a dead link that should go to some mp3s.

I have to say, the Cwejman sounds really, really good.

I had forgotten about this!

I guess these qualify

Are they obscure yet though, given the OP’s question ?

Possibly not… where to draw the line?

The trickiest question of all!

They’re not obscure to those who know modular, but may not be well-known among those whose primary exposure is to the big synth names.

Obscure no more, and now semi-modular too

People who don’t label their pictures are like people who cough at the Opera. They are destined to the inner circle of hell…

For every one else, seems to be a Radionic Machine, Wishing Box, 15 dials, dual copier with 3 electrical boosters

very little modular, but friggin great!

Oh wow, that description is… weird. Manifestations, cloning and vampire energy! What’s not to like.

and obscure, of course

This surely counts as obscure. 1 of 1.

Is that a custom unit from our very own @J3RK?! :aw:
