OB and External Routing problem (DT2 + Cubase)

Hey all,

I am setting up my DT2 in Cubase Pro 14 for recording all tracks individually. I created Audio Tracks and routed the Track Inputs to each track.

For the External Input I can only choose Stereo while in the DT2 mixer it’s set to Dual Mono, I would suspect I could choose the L and R channel separately no?

If I set the Cubase Audio track to Mono it won’t let me select the External Input at all, so I am stuck with a stereo track with both my Mono synths panned hard Left/Right. I tried routing it in Cubase to fix it but I got stuck as well (probably my own fault though).

DT2 OS 1.15A
OB v2.21.3
Cubase Pro 14.0.32 Build 342
Windows 10 22H2

Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers

Hi MokuM.

Here are just my quick thoughts about how to split the Stereo IN from the Digitakt 2 into two Mono Channels to get your Synths mixed to your interface’s Outs (I tested it; it works):

  1. Create one Stereo-Audio channel and assign the External In from Digitakt 2.
  2. Create two Stereo-FX channels, for example ‘DT2 IN L’ and ‘DT2 IN R’.
  3. Create two Stereo-Busses, for example ‘DT2 IN from Left’ and ‘DT2 IN from Right’. Route their Outputs to your Main Outs (or where you need the Signals of your synths to be routed)
  4. Set the Pan on the FX channel ‘DT2 IN L’ all the way to left, the Pan of the FX-channel ‘DT2 IN R’ all the way to right.
  5. Route FX ‘DT2 IN L’ Out to the Bus ‘DT2 IN from Left’ and FX Out ‘DT2 IN R’ to the Bus ‘DT2 IN from Right’.
  6. Activate both Sends on External In (Send External In to ‘DT2 IN L’ AND ‘DT2 IN R’ simultaneously)
→ Now the Stereo In from External In of your Digitakt 2 is send to both FX channels, still in Stereo - but now here’s the ‘trick’:
  7. Right Click on the Pan-Section (the mini display above the fader) on the Bus ‘DT2 IN from L’ and select ‘Stereo Combined Panner’ (instead of ‘Stereo Balance Panner’). Double-Click on the ‘L’ and type in ‘C’. Double-Click on the ‘R’ and type in ‘C’.
→ The Stereo Combined Panner allows you to decrease the Stereo width of your Bus. Like if you’d use an analog console you’d split up a Stereo Out of a synth in an IN for the Left and an IN for the Right channel and then set the Pan-Pots from Left to Center and from Right to Center.
  8. Now your Left IN from the Digitakt should be played back in the Center of your selected Output of your Soundcard as well as the Right IN should be played back correctly. Both are seperated.

I really hope this will help you in your case. I have to admit that I’m an Oldschool guy with an Oldschool console and all my gear is connected via Patchbays or directly to some IN’s and OUT’s of my UFX and/or ADDA converters. Maybe there’s another tool available in Cubase 14 but I haven’s checked it out in detail for quite some time. I just updated a couple of weeks ago.

If you need screenshots (or a template?), please reply here again. I don’t use any (free) image databases, so I’d have to find a way to upload this.

Hey kAfA,

Wow, thanks so much for your extensive guide!

I will try it out this evening and let you know how it went!

I am wondering though if it’s a bug on Cubase, OB or DT2’s side, or my PC/OS.

Hey MokuM,

I’m happy to help if I can. :slightly_smiling_face:

TLDR: I don’t think it’s a bug of the Digitakt II, nor Overbridge, nor the PC OS, nor Cubase that’s causing this behavior.

I use Win 10 Pro and Win 11 Pro. The behavior is identical on both systems. Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about MacOS, as I don’t use a Mac for making music. However, on iOS it’s the same - no dual mono Ins available (when using a RME UFX interface in Class Compliant mode).

I have no problems whatsoever with either Windows system; everything runs smoothly. This is certainly also thanks to the RME UFX, as RME’s driver technology is simply terrific.

The thing is that Cubase is designed a little differently than Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio, for example, when it comes to routing. While Cubase wants all routings to be defined “in advance” in the project setup (well, sort of…), channel assignment in Live or Bitwig is much more flexible and can be done per audio track and “on the fly,” if I may say so.

However, it is also not possible in Live or Bitwig to configure the Overbridge input of the Digitakt II as a dual mono input. Unlike Cubase, there is even no “External In” that can be selected as a signal path. In those DAWs, it’s important to understand that the Digitakt II’s input signal is routed to the main outs in the device’s routing. This means that you have to select the main out (post mixer) as Ins in the DAW and then set the monitor to ‘Pre Mix’ in the Digitakt II’s sampling menu - so that you can listen to the incoming signal… As you can see, the devil is in the details.

Enough Blabla. I hope you’ll be successful. Have a great Sunday!
