I have the following instruments/gear:
Digitakt
Digitone
Analog Heat MkII
Behringer TD-3
Korg volca bass
DSI Evolver
Arturia Keystep 37 midi/usb keyboard
Behringer UMC1820 interface

I am currently learning Ableton 11 Live.

I am trying to find the best configuration to do the following things:

  1. Have the ability to enter notes into Digitone/Digitakt to create internal and midi sequences for external hardware using my arturia keystep.
  2. Be able to occasionally send midi from Ableton to apply arps and drawn in notes to external hardware
  • Have Daw sync/track all gear
  • Use all elektron gear in Overbridge mode

I currently have the elektron heat acting as a final plugin on the Master in Ableton after a compressor with no issues.

I am able to send midi/arps from Ableton to external hardware only when my keystep is in USB mode.

When it is in USB mode however, I am not able to select tracks/enter notes into the digitone and digitakt as I was able to before when the keystep was acting as a midi controller at the start of the chain. But when keystep was in Midi mode, it would play its internal arp or sequencer anytime I attempted to send midi notes from the DAW and wouldn’t allow me to do so.

I could go on and on, all of the things I have tried. I figured, while I continue troubleshooting, I’d ask anyone here who might have a similar hybrid setup and gear, to offer advice.

I think things would be a lot easier if the Arturia Keystep I have didn’t have an interal sequence/arp that goes off when I try send Midi from the Daw.

I’m not entirely sure given the gear I have, that what I’d like to do is possible. Perhaps a different keyboard without a sequencer/arp? I cant seem to find one.

I appreciate any help. Sorry for the headache

You can use the DIP switches on the back of the Keystep to change how it reacts to incoming MIDI. Or at least, you can do that with the original Keystep. I guess yours is the same.

Also, it sounds like your MIDI from Ableton is going to the Keystep when it should be going to the Elektron boxes. Check the MIDI out destinations in Ableton. Are you using the External Instrument device?

Arturia just released a firmware update for the keystep and now it is able to do midi thru and not be triggered by the incoming clock signal from the daw. So everything now works, except…

When I try to use an ARP on of the the external instrument tracks (Yes I have been using external instrument device), the arp does not pick up more than one note, it just repeats one note on my TD3, when I have everything configured as follows with midi:

Daw > Interface > Keystep > digitone > Digitakt > TD3

When I have this configuration:

Daw > Interface > TD3 and with the Keystep in USB mode (No midi connections)

The arp takes in more than one note and plays through chords I enter on the keyboard…

more headaches

Short answer because I’m quite busy today. After searching the Arturia forum IMO this ‘one note arp’ is caused by a MIDI loop.

EDIT: Which new FW for Keystep 37? I see only ‘12-Aug-2021, 234.3 Kb, 1.1.6.579’

I was mistaken, yes I now have 1.16. which allows me to Arm sequence/arp from starting when receiving clock.
