What’s the workflow like on this?
e.g. how do you enter a chord without an external midi controller?

Damn, the guy is still making benefit out of such a cheap and packed device with constent firmware updating? Amazing.
Is it me or all the recordings i hear have this “kitchen” reverb?
thoughts on getting the box as my first hardware? Not counting MIDI keyoard.
I’d preffer a Digitakt, but can’t find one used bellow 700 Euros, at least not where I live.
And getting one from another country, well that would be way too risky.
I would not recommend as a first box. Unlike a Digitakt, it’s very difficult to get something basic up and running quickly. The controls are fiddly, very few detailed tutorials and the small size advantage is somewhat limited by a lack of battery power.
I would recommend either Models series or Sonicware Liven Lo Fi 12 ahead of this.
But honestly, what I’ve learned from buying budget gear is that it’s usually better to just wait and save up for the premium thing you really want. I have 3 budget boxes all of which are fine in their own way but I kind of kick myself now because together they could have added up to something like a Roland SP 404 or MPC One, which I would get much better long term use from.
My own story is that I was just frustrated by the small, cheaper bits of kit I bought first, and Digitakt was my first keeper. I speak from a position of privilege, as I could have afforded it right away; I was just being frugal, and it ended up costing me more. I have not used the Qun, but it reminds me of things I found discouraging.
I understand not wanting to buy from too far away, but I think it would be safer to buy from someone who has a reputation here (and is within the EU) than from someone random closer to home. If you participate a bit more actively and get your trust level updated, you will have access to the Marketplace.
Digitakt all day any day. If my house caught fire and I could only save one item, it’d be my most expensive item because I’d be able to sell it, and buy a new Digitakt. It’s one of the greatest sampler/drum machines ever made.
You could do a lot for relatively cheap with a yamaha rm1x and it could be a great hub for midi sequencing later, but there’s so much menu diving and the sound is really not modern so it would be an exercise in learning. A korg electribe is also a great starting point and would be approximately equal in cost or less to the yamaha, both are big enough to feel like real hardware, not what you get with volca / aira (or this Qun), that “I’m playing with toys” feeling.
I think if you keep shopping, you’ll find a better deal on a digitakt than you think, like maybe only 100-150 more than you would pay for the yamaha or the korg, and I would also recommend digitakt as something which you could use for both learning and then later more advanced learning and fun.
A digitakt is like a decent bicycle, because it’s easy to learn to ride from place to place, but it will take some work to win tour de france, and from now til then you’ll get a lot of mileage out of it in between.
I was excited about this at first but I sold mine and got a used iPad instead for making music. I must say I really loved the idea of it, the creator is kind and responsive, the Discord community is great, there is good documentation on his GitHub, but… it was like an octatrack sealed in the puzzle box from Hellraiser except the box is powered by a buggy micro processor, sorry Qun, maybe if it were atleast the size of a Volca I would have stuck with it…
Yeah, those are all valid points. I’m glad I haven’t rueshed it and ordered it.
you using any software currently? if so, try and think about the features of it you like and what you dislike. being able to identify with those qualities should help in researching and deciding what hardware is right for you.
It’s restricted so that people can’t come here just to sell things or use the forum only for purchases without participation. it’s a system that insures this stays a community and not a random sales website.
yeah, will try that. Though reading up on it, I get why it is restricted, but I do wonder what kind of issues mods had with buyers too. Wouldn’t it make more sense to restrict who csn sell?
Will try to be more of an active member. Community seems sound, just not sure how will I able to contribute, hah.
EDIT: makes sense about marketplace being the maing thing.
I’m in… pause I guess. Trying to do some wiggling with just Ableton stock and creating something from noise.
Also saving up for a field recorder as I’m looking to do more sample based stuff, but my laptop is getting laggy and buggy, and everythimg is just a hassle and not enjoyment. Otherwise, I’d use Pigments also.
I have NI M32, I thought I would be more software based but it’s definitely not for me.
You want to sample nature? or world sounds? I bought my older zoom h1 for around 40usd. unless you have special needs or want to multitrack, that should be an easy mark to hit with most average field recorders (inexpensive to buy used). if you don’t have sw you specifically like then you’re pretty much a blank slate, I’d hold out for a digitakt or buy a volca sample in the meantime while you save up. getting your hands on something will help. even a model samples can be had for around 200, but for me I’d rather the volca sample for appx 100, save the other 100 towards acquiring a digitakt sooner.
both really. I was looking either for a Tascam Dr-40x or Zoom H4n Pro.
Been looking about Ssmples too, but I feel like sooner rather than later I’m still going to look for a Digitakt. Been looking at it for years but couldn’t save up. That will now may be possible, and with OS 1.50 just seems like the best choice.
if only you’d been able to buy prior to 1.50 being released, you could have guaranteed yourself a better price. I still got a good price on my second digitakt even after then (the 1.50 release), so you just have to be vigilant and keep watch. also, h4n is a good recorder and can be purchased relatively inexpensive as well. you have to decide on your priority.
if my funds are limited and I want something expensive and something else less expensive, I usually hold my money until I find the more expensive item first, the reason being that I don’t always know when a good deal will come along on either, but the expensive item is more important to get as low a price as possible because by percentage it will always cost more than the second item, therefore the lower cost item is always closer in reach - for example a 200 item, even if you can get it for 100 is a great deal, 50% off is incredible, but a 1000 item at 20% off is 800, still expensive but 20% in that case is 200, which is the cost of the lesser item at full price.
So the greater the cost, the greater the discount. that means that saving more on the greater priced item becomes priority, because even at full price, the lower cost item with no savings is still cheaper than losing out on the savings you may get with the more expensive item.
anyways these are strictly my opinions, you should do what feels best and makes most sense for yourself.
Glad to see a positive review as stumble upon this box after failing to order the woovebox… I cant understand why it has to be compared to a Digitakt honestly… it is what it is… and constant firmware changes with additions is always a plus considering the so many grooveboxes around waiting for small improvements for months near a year. I reckon there is room to improve even further. I agree the menu diving can put people off but again this look like a programmable unit more than a plug and play one… experimental indeed and for 190 Eur is slightly more expensive than a Pocket Operator
I understand with the new firmware is now 4 Voices?
I couldn’t find anything specifically for the Qun, but grabbed one of these GoPro cases and broke up some of the foam. It’s in there pretty snug, so think it’s a decent solution:
Got one of these incoming, concerned I won’t get on with the user interface but it does have some interesting features, so hope that I will find it ok to use.
