Novation Circuit Rhythm and Circuit Tracks

Had a little more time with CT and the editor, definitely a few things I’d like to see, especially WRT to QOL stuff for the patch editor, it is usable but a bit too much jumping between pages involved - like the macros are at the top of the screen, but you have to jump to another screen to edit them etc. I also would prefer if it was scalable, I don’t need to see things as big and with as much space around them personally, especially if it means more can be shown on the page.

As usual with new synths I do a few tests almost straight away to see if they meet certain requirements, things like how the envelopes respond, how the filter sounds across its range, oscillator ranges and so on. I think the engine is decent enough, it did not blow my mind with anything as expected, but seems pretty flexible. I wasn’t able to create some of the sounds exactly as I wanted, for example the acid test - I could not get a very accurate TB-303 sound, mainly due to the square wave, slide behaviour and filter response, however I did manage to make a decent acid patch that I’d happily use.

I think it will be pretty good for some nice pad sounds, Juno-esque stuff etc. For drum sounds I found the envelopes a bit imprecise for some of the drum sounds I like, but I’ll probably delve a bit deeper at some point, however I would not most of the time waste a voice for drums, but it can be handy for sampling them. For bass it seems ok too, not going to worry some of my other gear, but I reckon definitely usable for certain kinds of bass sound for sure.

I think I prefer CR overall, and if I just had to have one it would be CR, but I think CT makes a nice support unit, a lot of the workflow is similar* and CT polyphonic parts and midi tracks will come in handy when using them together. CR seems overall more capable of being a standalone song maker though.

*I really hope for some harmonisation of workflow features in future updates, where this is possible, it is a bit jarring to be using one of them and realising, oh this one does not have that. Examples being scales on CR, keyboard pitch for samples on CT, patch flip on CT synth tracks, to name a few.

Finally I think making patches on CT using components is a bit of a chore sometimes, it would be great to have some template sounds both in components but also on the hardware that can be simply edited on the hardware then saved for later fettling on components to do more detailed edits.

Had the rhythm already packed for sending back because of impatience and lack of time, but decided to dedicate it a friday evening. Made three little tracks in the last few hours. Nothing exciting but learning the workflow and mixing + arranging possibilites. Good practice.
You can listen to my first demos (if you like), though I’m not sure yet what to think about them

thanks @darenager for the motivation…

thank you
currently not really knowing what kind of music I want to achieve, so I‘m just mucking around with this new toy :upside_down_face:

It’s you the master of the device  you can achieve any style with a circuit

Your mucking’s sounding pretty good so far  I like this raw funk you’re getting out of it, I’m trying to bend it to fit my textures and loops but it doesn’t quite want to, which is understandable. My long ass stereo samples in a mono only 220sec kit is a challenge, to say the least.

thanks. I‘m just using one shots so far. Haven’t even bought a sd card yet

FWIW you can use a 2gb card and still have plenty of space for all the pack slots full to capacity. So if you have an old one from a phone or something give it a try. I found an old sandisk 2gb and it works fine.

Something I intend to try is doing a classical remix, in the vein of Max Richter’s great remix of The Four Seasons, find a classical piece on youtube, sample it into the slots in smallish chunks and go for it. Should be a fun summer project.

For reference, Max Richter’s masterpiece Spring 1:

I think the original circuit and all its updates have spoiled me, I want lots of updates to these! Even though they’re really great as is.

Where I really have problems with these monophonic track samplers like this, elektron or the tracker, is that I usually use at least one atmospheric pad sound per song. Sure you can use multiple tracks, but that limits the overall standalone power, or you could sample chords - pads, but they cut each other of which I don’t like in most cases.
For drums and mono synth lines, or for chopping up records these are great, but for pads you almost need an extra synth nearby.
Is it so difficult to have samplers with poly tracks? Samples could be so nice for pads

This is what pulls me towards the Tracks rather than the Rhythm (not that I will get either in the near future). Polyphony is just in short supply among my other boxes.

This is why, polyphonic midi out on the rhythm would be really nice, so you could have a track feeding out midi chords to a synth that go over several patterns.
You can sample longer pads though, if you press a new sample slot while recording, it will start recording to the new slot immediately. And then you can set the track length to 4 bars (or 8 with the 32 steps enabled). Using patterns you can get up to 64 bars of atmospheric chords. add a little slope on the track, and it should sound pretty seamless.

Koala.
Ableton et al.

yeah sure. MPCs etc
There are options.
But a lot of the cool performance oriented samplers - OT, DT, MS, CR, Tracker, Play - all have monophonic tracks.

I know. It puzzles me too. But thats what is available. So I dunno the answer!

I just like to complain here and there :slightly_smiling_face: no answer required
