No stereo samples in AR?

Was really looking forward to this and might still pick one up next year. However I do have an MD fully loaded with an OT. I am a big fan of taking random tracks and making them wide. The machine drum has 16 tracks so using 2 tracks to create stereo or the delay FX would achieve this and thank god its 16 tracks. Now with only 12 tracks in AR its still the same issue with play back of mono only. Thats a bummer! I hope they can update that. I don’t own an analog drum machine so one day i will but for now i believe the Analog 4 will be the best bet for expanding my Elektron horizons.

In one of the NAMM demos I saw Elektron said that they were using stereo samples.

It makes sense for the samples to be mono as they are mixed into the analog voices before the overdrive and the filter which are not stereo circuits.

Yep, they are using stereo samples (you can upload stereo samples), but the samples are converted to mono, and then sent to the filter etc.

I has been stated that a range of bit depth and sample rates can be loaded, as well as mono or stereo, but all will be converted to 16 bit 48kHz mono before playback. A bit odd with a 24 bit sampler in the family. But with a D/A per voice to get the samples into the signal path, I get it.

Which sampler does the sample playback engine sound like?

Akai
dynachord?
Emu
Ensoniq
Roland?

MIDI SDS, the technique that’s currently used for sample transfer, does support only mono samples.

hey guys
since the last response from @void, is it still not possible to use stereo samples?
and if so:
has any one a quick and dirty way to convert 1000 stereo samples (one shot drum hits) into mono?

Thanks a lot !

You can upload stereo samples but they will be converted on the way there.

But there are disadvantages to that (mainly time used and conversion quality is iffy). I use audacity to batch process. In addition to mono, the same chain normalizes and offsets DC. Very useful.

Stereo samples in AR is not possible and probably never will.

For batch converting I find Adobe Audition is the best and fastest tool, but there’s plenty of software out there that can get the job done.

If you take a stereo sample and split the left and right channels into two separate samples, you can load both samples into the RYTM and pan them hard left and hard right on two tracks that don’t share an analog voice.

This is a total work flow killer though. If Elektron were to integrate the ability to play stereo samples (at the expense of having to use two tracks) within the RYTM OS, I think a lot of people would be very happy.

Sonic Foundry’s Convrt App works like a charm for any type of conversion, especially batches.

you can spatialize the sounds in post :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

you know that’s not the same

Maybe there are no stereo samples because then you wouldn’t need an OT… :cowboy_hat_face:

People buying an OT because you can’t use stereo samples in the AR? Give me a break. The conspiracy theory that Elektron spread out all their features on several boxes to get people to buy all of them is getting old and tired and should be put to sleep.

Here is the real reason why only mono samples are possible in the AR:
The wonderful sounding analog signal path of the AR makes samples way to good. If the AR could handle and playback stereo samples angels would die and fall from the heavens. So, to keep God from running out of angels in heaven Elektron decided to go for mono sample playback.
