No New Gear Year 2023 AKA NGNY 2023

still on track to pass the challenge. had to fund new hardwood floors and car repairs. I bought a lot of gear over the past five years to last me a life time.

Not wishing to inspire any GAS, but these were the videos I found helpful:

Still going strong for 2023.

The biggest challenge I find is learning to be competent / expressive on a new instrument. Workflows can vary so much it can feel like a guitarist picking up a banjo! I’m not fond of having to relearn skills I already have but differently.

…New Elektron machines can be a danger zone but pretty much anyone else is low risk.

Well I for one have missed your presence as you’re one of my favorite voices on Nauts, but I completely get it. Well done. Hope the shop is still doing smashingly well for you and don’t be a stranger.

Which maybe speaks to user enjoyment of the P3? I sold on a bunch including my Live 2 for the all in one portable (it’s a bit big, though) Push 3 standalone and I couldn’t be happier. It’s replaced a large inventory of gear with a single awesome device. Uh, this might be the wrong thread for this. Apologies, as you were…

Thanks a million. You made my day.

The shop is running spectacularily well. In the summertime we broke all the previous sales records, and now we’re slowly descending into autumn mood and lower sales expectations. It’s always hard when you’ve had three or four very busy months and suddenly it goes back to normal. You start to wonder what it is that you’ve done wrong, but it’s just the natural cycle. This summer we were wise enough to stash away some of the money so now we have a solid financial base. No more sleepless nights, not for financial worries at least.

The shop is also simultaneously helping me with NGNY and hindering my progress. We get some second hand music gear at the shop and I can take them home to test them, but I don’t need to keep them. It’s like a personal gear loaning service. Also bought a Korg SV1 -stage piano for the shop with the summer sales money. It makes me want to do overwork and stay at the shop playing piano after we’ve closed. My idea is to have a small setup of gear at the shop for live gigs. It’s easier for a band to come and play a gig when there’s a proper piano and some amps and mics and keyboard stands there already.

For those of you who made it this far without a single misstep - congratulations! You know yourself a little better and no doubt it’s a great confidence booster.

For those of you who didn’t: in my eyes that’s an even better opportunity to grow and learn. Don’t give up and know that you’re the one who is getting stronger. You fail, pick yourself up again and continue - that’s what life experience is all about.

Well… I almost make it through the entire year.

I was missing too much the hardware workflow. I know I can do everything and more in a computer but even a good controller is not comparable to the hardware experience.

Even though, I learned a lot through this NGNY thing, mainly that I don’t NEED hardware to make good music, and the only reason to buy it is to have more fun in the process. Then, if hardware is becoming a struggle because of GAS or whatever it doesn’t worth the money.

I’ll probably buy some other stuffs next few months, but with a lot more perspective of what I really want from it.

For those who are still on boat, congrats! There’s not too much left.

I was already out in January when I made the trades between Digitakt and SP-404 MKII, but now I’m definitely out.

Just bought an MPC Live 2 again after selling it earlier this year. Got it for the same price as I sold it +€40 and got a unit that’s basically brand new with full 22 months warranty left, plus a hard transport case. Felt like a no-brainer to me now that I know much more what I enjoy about it (to quickly make new songs with samples, synthesis and polyphony) and what to avoid (trying to mix those songs within the MPC).

Despite being out of NGNY, I feel I had a decent run and I’ve learned a lot about what workflows I enjoy and what I don’t like.

to all that still in the challenge, don’t give up, only month and a half to go!

holyshit, almost a year without any new gear… I’ve reached a point that the longer I wait the less I actually want something. that’s really nice liberating feeling, not having constant thoughts about gear and what’s on sale and what’s new and “ooh if I had this I’d be doing 5 albums a year”…

instead, I constantly think about what else can I do with my stuff, how can I shuffle, maybe I’ll try this and that, and it keeps me occupied real good in the time I have for music.

I’m really glad I took this challenge, did good for me, hopefully for all that are still here as well

… this is going to be the easiest black friday ever :sunglasses:

I’m anxiously awaiting the no new gear thread for 2024

Hmmm… I failed a little bit… mucho… eurocrack…
I think I will join next year.

You might as well start it now. There’s already a 2023 Hits and Misses thread.

hey @Wolf-Rami

Thank you for starting this thread! I was one of the first couple folks that joined on, and i’m down to do it again for 2024, especially considering… I failed! I bought an M8 Tracker, one of the BRK Edition ones for $500, I think around beginning of October.

Still was good to have this in my mind all year. It was a challenge at times but ultimately worthwhile.
I appreciate and applaud your honesty!

I’d love it if you could cross my name off so that it’s clear I’ve failed this year and i’m gonna try again in 2024. Would also be really supportive of you starting the '24 thread, if you want!

Hey everyone,

I was one of those who didn’t fully commit to NGNY at the start of the year but said I would “take it to heart”

Glad to report I haven’t purchased a single thing this year and it’s felt pretty good. There have definitely been a few times where I’ve been like “I should try an sp404!” Or “I really want a new analog delay pedal!”—but then just stopped myself.

I already have a digitakt which keeps me plenty busy, and I’ve got a delay pedal. Etc etc

Just enjoying all of my existing gear this year, of which there is plenty of to make any kind of music I desire.

Cheers everyone

So far I believe that I will actually pass the challenge! I had to fund auto repairs and new hardwood floors and fencing for the backyard that ate my synth funds and was out of work for a couple of months. Plus my property taxes are due next month. I do want to save up for a few synths and offload what I am not using. Maybe I can pass the challenge next year as well? Save an additional year or two.

I actually failed NGNY this week, but I don’t feel too bad about it. My goal this year was to stop the senseless gas»ing and distractions and focus on my core gear, and I feel I’ve succeeded quite well. Sold a lot of stuff, learnt the Octatrack and Digitone better.

At the moment I’m not planning to go NGNY next year,. I hope I’ve made a permanent change to my approach. We’ll see though :slightly_smiling_face: If I fall back on old habits, it’s NGNY 2025 for sure…

I think I can do the NNGY24.
