No New Gear 2026 - NGNY26

My GF has said she’d be cool with never eating out again if it means more synths, but I told her that’s not necessary. I’d rather have a pizza every now and then than have another synth if that is the decision I have to make. Of course both is ideal, but you know how life is.

I think it depends on it’s function. Bad cables, speakers, audio interface then no, you clearly need that stuff for the setup to function. But if it’s one of 3 or four synths/drum machines/samplers that you have, maybe you need to think about if you really NEED to replace that thing. Are you a gigging musician with your set list depending on that thing or are you bummed that you don’t have your preferred sawtooth osc available?

Oke… I am kind off out. I promised myself I wouldnt buy anything unless a box that I am looking for for a long time would come by at a fair deal. And that time has come, I found one, the money was allready reserved for it. I am very happy. I did buy something, but that was the deal i had with myself. Still not going to buy anything else though. At least… still trying not to. So far so good for that part.

I’m still accidentally in! Last purchase was in fall 2025. I have 3 Elektron boxes I adore, a really cool FM synth and a small modular setup. I don’t feel too put off by this and have no plans to add anything, mostly thanks to the economy

Guitar Center is one of the only online stores that will let you split up an order across multiple cards, which means it’s become my main way to get rid of gift cards. Which means I just ordered an EQ pedal.

So yeah someone gave me a gift card and I ended up spending more of my own money than the card was worth.

I hate gift cards.

I just came into a little gift card that I could choose the vendor. I saw GC listed, but reluctantly chose the one that covers cat food instead. Definitely not as fun.

But, I don’t need more.

I’ve been wanting to add hand percussion and my bro lent me some of his to record, Then I wanted congas, but played them in via Push. Then I wanted bongos, and I remember seeing Matt Ross-Spang on Puremix where they did the hillbilly bongos using an upside down guitar and that works!

I still need to re-record the hillbilly bongos, but I’m just happy it’s passable.

I came to senses and returned my purchase, so:

I did some math this morning. I listed basically all the music hardware and software I own. Turns out that I have (approximately) 320 instruments, 310 effects and over 140,000 factory presets.

So then I put that in AI (because my brain doesn’t work like this) and asked, “If I take one of those instruments and run it through up to four effects, how many possible signal chains could there be?”

Assuming effect order matters and I don’t use the same effect twice, there are about 2.9 trillion combinations. And that’s not even counting layering or modulations within a synth.

So now I have the numbers to show that I really need to stop buying stuff.

I’m still in, but a new batch of thingies I like isn’t exactly making this any easier.

I try to keep busy with stuff I have. And trying to commit to it. For example running free tracker software on a Mac with a PS4-controller, as an antidote.

Please stop listing/naming specific pieces of gear on this thread!

You are absolutely right. I’ve edited my post. Not smart to talk about specific drugs to a group of people that went cold turkey on 1-1-26.

I’ve been doing a lot of studying with mixing and the phrase I hear often, relates to the equipment that gets that “extra 10%.”

So many one-trick expensive devices that adds that extra 10%

The good news for me is that I am definitely focused on the other 90%, but just thinking how it’s all so crazy with the number of possibilities to often reach the same or similar results with alternate equipment.

Still not hard to guess though :sunglasses:

Okay, I’m out. Due to a certain batch of machines that is being sold at the moment.

Edit: I must say that the almost 9 months of not buying any gear was a real enlightning experience. I lost track of the number of times I was gassing over stuff. Today I was hovering over the ‘buy now’ button for ten minutes and took the plunge with a ‘f*** *t’. Not exactly sure why I caved at this moment.

Now I am officially out. A month earlier than intended, but i stuck to the plan I set to myself for the beginning of this year. No regrets.

Might join again next year, at least for a couple of months.

Good luck to all those still in!

I’m out for 2026, although I have gone without a gear purchase since June 2025 — so I’m pretty happy with that.

The negative: I’m out - I bought a thing I wanted for a long time and one I believed I needed (as it usually goes).

The positives: I’ve spent over 10 months without a new gear purchase and reevaluated several pieces of hardware that I had. I’d also like to believe that this purchase has been more justified than many of my past ones (and I’ve honestly tried some things before to avoid it and researched more deeply, in the end persuading myself that my setup does need it).

I’d be up for NGNY27 if another thing I’ve planned on getting releases before EOY, otherwise I’ll likely do a NGNY27 with that exception, which should still be a win

Hey there, how’s everybody doing? I’ve been running under the radar this year, but I still haven’t bought a thing. Instead I cleared out some drawers with small stuff that added up over the years. Like cables, accessories for turntables, … didn’t get too much money from that, but the clean space it left behind made me feel really good!

Just 2.5 months to go. Stay strong! :muscle:
