Nintendo Switch 2 Launch and Hype

Ha! I tested there too  Did USB stack testing for Vista and then network interfaces for XP. Worked in the Game Studios for a while doing hardware compatibility, and WAY back (I think 1995/96 or so) I did modem and ISDN device cert testing for WHQL. I do not miss it, though I did have some fun while I was there initially.

Ive been bouncing back and forth on this yet. Hearing perspectives supportive and critical of Nintendo.

Im just going with a Steam Deck when i have time to get back into gaming. I mostly play indie games anyway and prices are lower on Steam.

I dont play a lot of Nintendo games

I think there’s no reason to get a Switch (2) over Steamdeck then.

Not a lot of enthusiasm or hype after the presentation, eh?

I think hype will come with the games, and there’s nothing Nintendo-exclusive to get properly excited about yet IMO

Im calling it now:

“Switch Welcome Tour” is going to be GotY this year

Everyones going to look so dumb after asking why Nintendo is charging for it. After playing it people are going to change their tune asking “why did they charge SO LITTLE for it?”

I would not ho that far  but I bet there are Easter Eggs in it. I suppose levels of old games.

But I still will not pay for it.

I’ll eat my hat. But that would be hilarious to see.

It’s going to be interesting to see how many of the “big” third party titles that are released over the next months will also come to Switch 2.

Like Expedition 33 for example. Looks like a perfect Switch 2 title. But with all the hype about it being more powerful than many expected, we’re probably still in the same situation as with Switch 1: newer games can’t be ported that easily and will require developers to invest a lot of time and money to make a Switch 2 version. That probably doesn’t run that well, even if they did their best. I hope that enough developers will do that, at least for titles that would probably find a big audience on Switch 2, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I bought a Steamdeck OLED and Retroid Pocket 5 instead and can play Nintendo Switch games on both as well as new PC games and retro Atari, Sega, Nintendo, Xbox and Sony Playstation games. Way better. Switch 2 is hype.

Likewise! Sort of. My brother actually had to order for me because somehow he got through the line twice on the Best Buy website but I couldn’t get through the line on any website. It’ll be just a mild pain in the ass since we live in separate cities but it’s nice to at least have an order secured and it’s nothing we can’t figure out.

I have a very strange reason😂 the buttons on switch 1 are to small. I will still mostly play switch 1 games but with better hardware. But some games I would go switch 2 version. Todk and Metroid 4 when its out.

Yeah, I’m curious about how the 3rd party development plays out as well. I think the S2 is likely going to be a huge market.

Given both Xbox and PlayStation are working on similar, low-power, AI-supplemented handhelds, along with all the various pc handhelds out there, I think developers and publishers will realize that optimizing for handheld will be in their best interests

Bit of an odd statement while at the same time admitting you’re pirating Switch games…

I’d really love that. Imo, we don’t need more power than what PS4 could do. I mean look at Red Dead 2, what else do you want? Looking in from the outside, it doesn’t seem like the additional power of the PS5 generation has led to any big jumps in the experiences we can have.

So yeah, I’d love it if we just froze technology here, so developers can make games faster and cheaper and everything runs well on a handheld. It’s also not like the console makers make their money by selling hardware, so enabling developers to make more games again by stopping the race towards ever more complex textures would probably be worth it money wise as well.

Totally agreed

Yeah I reckon the Switch 2 might ride the handheld PC buzz a bit, offering an option for those who fancy the idea of on the go AAA games but not wanting to wrestle with PC hardware.

The dream for me would be a Steam Link app so I can stream from my PC too, but there’s more chance of Astrobot coming to it.

the “i don’t even own a TV” of consoles

when is the release date again?

i’ll probably get it just for balatro and hades 2. i clocked 200 hours on the first hades, and just jumped into balatro a few weeks ago. it’s already ruining my life worse than hades ever did
