Nintendo Switch 2 Launch and Hype

I have so many games on my Switch I bought during sales that I haven’t even opened. Maybe it’s okay if we buy fewer games but pay more and actually play them. Although most of these games I mentioned are indies and I’m happy to pay the developers even if I didn’t play the games.

Same here, but also the steam pile of shame is big. What mostly interests me is to get rid of stuff. There were times I had 3 consoles and a PC. Bonkers, absolutly insanity. I don‘t want that any more. Two machines max.

I guess the argument here is not necessarily that people working for Nintendo (or other developers/publishers) will have more money at the end of the month than they had several years ago. The argument is more that they probably still get the same wage they did years ago, while everything else like food has become more expensive. Because the developer is still selling their games for the same price as they did ten years ago, so wages can’t go up that much and it’s likely that management will use that as an excuse.

Now if we’re talking about whether CEOs could earn a bit less and workers could get more, so everybody is happy and consumers don’t need to pay higher prices, I’m not against that.

I’m obviously talking out of my ass here, you might have more insight.

Very on the fence about the NS2 to be honest, it looks great in a lot of ways but since finally putting together a semi-decent PC its opened my eyes to what life is like outside of a walled garden. No online fees for play, better sales, more customisability. The things I like about this may feel like anathema to somebody else, for sure. Personally, im going to save a little warchest for the newer range of PC handhelds on the newer AMD Z2 Extreme touted to release at some point.

Its good that we have more options though and some of the games listed for NS2 release, such as CP2077 or Elden Ring would be great to play specifically optimised for NS2 in a more relaxing physical position without needing to tinker and mess with settings.

Would be cool if Sony or MS make similarly dedicated/hybrid handhelds too. Didnt the OG PSP sell over 100m units? It shows Sony could enter the space and do well potentially and more competition is always good.

I know nobody asked, but theres my opinion sent into the world.

SERIOUSLY!

My Switch mk 1 is mostly filled with indie games, a few small titles, and the sparse 1st party games.

Not EVERY project needs to be these vast expansive, highly detailed experiences.

My game of the year for 2023 was Cocoon. Loved that short little game. Well worth the 20 dollars.

Lower buyer investment, lower expectations, and an oversell of an experience

If I was mainly interested in third party games, I’d just get a Steamdeck. I don’t see any reason why a Switch 2 wouldn’t be worse and more expensive in that case.

The thing is, I mostly just want to play some fun Nintendo games and nice indies. Handheld. If I can also play some third party games that need more power now on Switch 2, it can be my only console and I’m fine with that. Makes more sense for me than to think about getting a Steamdeck from time to time, but it’s not worth it for the few hours I have for third party games.

What would be nice if Nintendo just put all of their classics on Switch 2 with less hoops to jump through. Like the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess remasters.

Yeah I get that completely. Some might say going down the emulation route is an option, but I personally don’t like relying on questionable websites or somehow ripping .iso’s. On it’s face, the NS2 is a perfectly good option and i wouldn’t try to talk anybody out of it. Hopefully theyre easy enough to find at, or close to, launch. The only “advice” I would give is to advise people against paying scalpers if theyre ever tempted as thats almost certainly going to be an issue. Even then, value is subjective and if people are ok paying over the top then it is what it is. Hopefully you get one and enjoy it

They’re still not using hall effect sticks :skull:

The games look good though…

I hope things go the way of the 3ds

Yeah, as I said, I don’t know if the workers would benefit from it. A hope is not the same as a belief.
What I do believe is that the cost of doing business in general will continue to go up, because that’s what inflation looks like in my experience. And, as I said, I don’t find it surprising to see prices go up. And sadly I wouldn’t be surprised at all to find CEOs reap whatever excess profit margin is being generated. I’m not saying I enjoy inflation, that I support it or think it’s great - I know my paychecks certainly haven’t risen in proportion to my cost of living…

Personally, I feel like the disconnect between world building / visuals and actual gameplay increases with production level. It just feels totally silly if you have these incredible looking vistas with a ton of lore and thought put into societies that populate it and their history - and all you do is mashing buttons to kill people or jump around like an idiot. I think this is most obvious with Assassin’s Creed, where the mechanics and movement feel worse than Mario 64, yet you have this super detailed replica of ancient Greece or Japan and gorgeous animations.

Now imagine these people could spend their time on building 10-20 hours experiences that are just fun to play and have great mechanics or, alternatively, really have something to say that requires world building. And only take two years to make and a million copies to sell to be a success. So much talent and money wasted.

A little bit off topic, but ive been trying to pinpoint why i didnt like Bioshock(1) it felt very arcadey. Sure the environment was beautiful. But i didnt care for the nonstop combat gameplay loop.

I think you defined my issue precisely

There’s a semi-famous essay on this, though it’s more about the dissonance of gameplay (shooting lots of innocent people) versus story (being the good hero). But somewhat similar to my argument:

My favourite games of the last ten years are more focussed experiences for sure. Transistor, Celeste, Dead Cells, Wolfenstein, Doom (& Eternal), Alan Wake 1 Remaster. I have, however, fallen for the live service trap more than once (Destiny 1 & 2, The Division 1 & 2) and despite clocking hundreds of hours, was left feeling acutely aware of wasting my limited time on this mortal coil lol. Definitely reconsidered what I elect to spend time on from now on and knowing the difference between “content” and a good experience.

Microsoft is teaming up with Asus to release a portable Xbox actually.

I think Microsoft in general is going back to its roots and Focusing on being a software company first. Hardware hasn’t worked out for the that great the past few generations. It’s why they are releasing their games on every platform, it’s more profitable.

Sony seems to be the most stuck in the past still believe in console generations and such.

I think going forward the setup that makes the most sense will be a gaming pc and whatever Nintendo has on offer.

I’m sure it depends on what area of Nintendo they’re in, some are less prestige and rely on the good will and tirelessness of contractors still.

Or even still, not giving a shit about their software and continuing to retreat into cloud hosting services.

Damn I did the math again to see if it makes sense in any way. Switch2 and MKW 509€, Controller 90€, 1TB SD Card 200€. Its 800€. PS5 Pro is 750€ at the moment with a 2TB SSD. Yeah no Handheld I know…but way more Power and Way more Storage. I would love a Switch 2 because I have lots of Switch 1 Games and would love to play them with good framerate.

You could always do it in stages, not ideal, I know. Maybe wait on the SD express and shuffle on the internal storage, use the joycons in the holder for a bit etc. At least with a backlog on NS1 games you can transition games-wise too.

From my understanding, your Switch 1 (Pro) Controllers will still work. But don’t quote me on that. It sucks hard that they switched to another SD cats format again. I remember how expensive bigger SD cards were at the launch of OG Switch, but two years in, they had become dirt cheap. Now we’re on another cycle of this.

I don’t think I need one on launch, but will inevitably get it at some point. For me, Bananza and Prime will be the test. If Bananza review consensus is that it’s as good as Odyssey, I might cave. I had to get OG when Odyssey was released, and luckily by that time, you could get used ones for a bit less than retail. If Prime 4 runs like ass on OG and it turns out I have time to play it on release, that might be a reason. If you can even get 2’s at that point.

You can use the old Pro Controller. But guess what they did…You can not wake the NS2 up from StandBy with the old one only the new one can do that.

Okay, but surely that won’t keep you from playing Mariokart with friends?
