NINA, motorized analog synth from Melbourne Instruments

Same. I guess they originally designed it as a mono synth and later turned it into a flagship poly?

Has anyone tried the new multi track sequencer? I’ve just installed it, read the manual and watched a bit of their tutorial. But honestly, I find it really confusing and didn’t manage to record anything once I’ve entered the new multi track sequencer.

I can’t even clarify the two most basic things, so can anyone clarify if (and how) I can just:

  1. Live record notes on atrack from an external (or the internal) keyboard? The manual and tutorial only speak of automation live recording. I can only work with sequencers when live recording notes, grid recording is useless to me unless maybe for some drums.
  2. Manually start the sequencer like I used to be able on the old Nina sequencer. Hitting “run” does nothing …

Thanks for helping, if these things aren’t possible, I don’t need to get into this.

Would be unfortunate, since the sequencer seems to be more or less an Elektron sequencer and I would try it out when noodling solo with Nina and see if I can get things done this way. Having trig locks integrated with the motorized knobs showing the values is a huge plus over the Elektron sequencer.

hey yeah I’ve been messing with it,

  1. at the moment live note recording isn’t in the beta, only automation via the knobs (press rec + run, led should flash in this mode)

  2. hitting run should definitely start the sequencer, are you running off internal midi clock?

Thanks! I’ll try it again with MIDI clock set to internal - once they’ve implemented live note recording ;).

What’s your thoughts about the new sequencer?

Really enjoying it aside from a few little bugs (and obv the lack of the live input) but have managed to get some fun lil jams going with 4 tracks and some weird parameter action, just takes a lil bit to get used to the key inputs/ui, using a keystep to at least get notes and chords in per step

new noise types are awesome too

Yeah, they’ve updated the sequencer, it now has live note recording:

I don’t know if it’s been fixed with this FW but in this video, inputting notes on the Sequencer seems buggy. Or it may be user error.

They squashed a few bugs with the latest OS, so hopefully everything is fine now. I’ll report back after vacation. I find it more and more appealing that I could now build sequences with just Nina and a keyboard and have all of the automation and plocks be shown by knob movements. Just record the loops and build on them in on another device.

How’s the saving system with this new Sequencer? Does it save the 4 sequences with the sounds used and can you recall those sequences via Program Changes?

I haven’t used it yet, since it didn’t have live note recording. I’m pretty sure sequences are saved independently of patches though, and the manual said something about basically endless amounts of patterns that can be saved.

I think the 16 buttons that Nina uses for sequences are quite close to Elektrons / drum machine classics, so it should hopefully feel alright to use these (unlike the clunky sequencers on most poly synths).

Can anyone with a Nina check if live recording notes and playing them back works now?

I’ve now installed the new OS and deactivated MIDI clock in. However, the sequencer doesn’t play the notes I’ve recorded with my MIDI keyboard. I’m pretty sure they’re in there, steps with notes are highlighted in grid recording mode and when I press them, I see a note value on the screen that also changes when I hold it and press a different note on my MIDI keyboard. Audio output routing can’t be the issue, as I can hear what I’m playing when I play it with the keyboard.

I was wondering whether this is in fact the latest OS I have downloaded and installed? Maybe something went wrong during installment?

maybe double check channel settings on your midi kbd match the track you’re recording to, this has caught me out before…also check track mutes aren’t enabled…

Thanks, I‘ve made sure that the MIDI channel is correct and it seems to have recorded the notes. So track mutes might be a good guess. I still don’t have the overlay and find the sequencer navigation a bit confusing without it.

@ayoy: Unfortunately, I still can’t get my Nina to playback any of the notes of a sequenced. Have you installed the latest firmware and can confirm that the sequencer works as intended for you?

I‘ve made sure all of the tracks are unmuted. I‘ve also made sure that there are in fact notes on certain steps by pressing rec, pressing a step, then selecting that steps and choosing a note from the menu with the encoder. As soon as I hit run, nothing happens. If I hit run and rec and turn knobs, it also doesn’t record any automation. What am I doing wrong?

I‘ve asked Melbourne a few days ago but there’s no response. Makes you appreciate Elektronauts, it’s frustrating to solve that stuff for niche hardware.
