#NGNY22 - Happy NoGear New Year!

:joy: Full on out, or sin noted out? Great synth, btw :+1:

Ok, so you all have convinced me. You are the best anti-GAS support group in town
I still like the syntakt and may get it at some point, but there is no hurry.

I downloaded some sound demos from elektron packs, and started working with the A4 and the drum machine (which is a TR-6S), and it went well. Cool sounds, and started exploring the unique features of the A4 compared to the DT+DN (parameter slides, etc).

Maybe I can reconcile with the A4, or at least, learn one or two things before letting it go.

Not sure. I’m definitely still into not buying anything. This is more about clearing space in my brain, and playing music instead of futzing with setups, preset-surfing, and all the other stuff that sidetracks you while playing and composing.

Keep me in. I can’t see me buying anything else for at least the rest of this year. Unless they make an OP-Z-Field  .

It really is! I can spend hours just coming up with cool stuff.

90 days of live 11 trial or 25% off in the summersale?

choices, choices…

I know it’s technically not sinning as live 11 could be labeled as essential/utility to make music but still 150,- euros.

Do you have a DAW already? Does Live 11 add something you really need? If not, there will be other discounts in the future.

I have live 10 but live 11 is truly a better experience on M1 Macs.

So im just looking to upgrade for the quality of life improvements live 11 has and I’m enjoying the added devices (running trial now)

Agree, the A4 is so sweet!

SHAME! I’ve sinned - traded my Eloquencer for a Hermod. Sorry friends. I’ll make a note of the transgression.

Still no “gear” and no plans or needs to.

However, I did buy an electro-acoustic tongue drum, which felt like I was sailing slightly close to the GASsy wind, but I’m happy to accept an acoustic instrument outside of the parameters of HNGNY (which I envisioned as being machines and pedals in my universe).
I bought my kids a mini version too so we could jam as a fam and I can keep my posher model in good shape.

However, the sailing close to the wind part is an acknowledgement that this purchase probably did buy into the “more stuff” paradigm. However, the machinations (excuse the pun) that have previously been involved (spending ages looking and ruminating around maybe/maybe not) were for the large part absent. As such it was a pretty clean purchase.

However, on account of my lengthy explanation, I’m willing to accept that this one was a concession to the fact that I’m not buying “gear” gear.

Acknowledgement over!

I still feel great about this project. We’re getting close to 6 months, and I’ve had a sell and a trade. Compared to my usual doings, this is smooth sailing :sailboat:

Same! After a few years of modules buying and swapping, I’ve just bought the two (mostly out of FOMO) this year and don’t feel at all the urge to buy anything else. Moreover, I have a gig on saturday and at no time have I felt that I lacked anything for it, I’ve only looked for solutions within what I have, and honestly, that’s already enough of a headache that way

Good luck with the gig! Have fun! What setup are you using? If you can, please do post (some of) your liveset here afterwards. Would be nice to take a listen!

As to the topic in general, sailing on some GASsy winds here myself. I’m still checking out gear pretty regularly but not actually buying anything so I guess you can call that a success? :grinning: Still also very much making music with my existing gear. Not content with 5,5 months yet, although for me ”failure” or ”success” will be determined in the long run anyway cos before NGNY my setup was in a state of flux.

Damn, stumbled onto the Thomann-website and now they have the full size-Linnstrument in stock. That’s basically the only thing I crave for my setup any more. ”Luckily” inflation has raised food/gas/electricity prices so high that I can’t afford to buy anything anymore.

This is by far the best year to have a no gear year. If I wasn’t having one voluntarily, I’d be forced to have one financially.

It’s gonna be a very basic with the OT playing stems from my songs, controlled by a Launch Control XL and with a Space Echo pedal as a send effect. Still undecided between my M:S or DN for the extra “play” box but I have until saturday to pick, right ?

Thanks a lot for asking, I’m going to try to record some sound (and even a video if I can) and will gladly post it here!

So you can run that through any effects gear you might have. Good way to muliply your gear together. Tongue drums sound so amazing, and they sound awesome with various effects. ( There’s a thread on that around somewhere. )

Lots of people in this thread have talked about how being NG has helped them discover what they own. Multiplying gear together is one of the places where your new secret sounds are hiding.

Makes me realize that having selected well, gives you the possibility to use what you have flexibly, and do that multiplying. The sum being more than the parts.

Yeah, it sounds marvellous through the MOOD / Cosmos / H9 effects.

Things can get pretty full sounding very quickly.

At the moment I just have those three pedals, my drum and the Pulsar 23 set up.

Both the tongue drum and the Pulsar are great on their own.
Together, they have enough varied textures to feed the Cosmos for some excellent free-form soundscaping.

All good fun!

Still going strong, haven’t bought anything, but I’ve acquired some gear by other means.

The friend who lives nearby, who works in a moving company that does a lot of schools and governement buildings, traded me a Marantz pro cassette deck for some old punk zines from my shop. Today he needed to offload some excess cd-players and cassette decks that were crowding his living room so I got three cd-players and a cassette deck for free. One of the cd-players happened to be rack mountable and from the same Marantz -series so I put them together in my rack. Now I can sample from tape, cd or vinyl easily without ever turning on the computer.

Earlier this week I dumpster dived a Casiotone CT-660 (and a bunch of other electronics), The Casiotone is fully working and includes these ”ambient sound effect” -buttons which turn on a backdrop of forest/sea/city/space sounds that you can play on top of. Crazy!

I’m a huge fan of the band Grandaddy and I always loved Jason Lyttle’s crappy but sympathetic synth sounds. This Casiotone gave me instant Grandaddy feelings and I think I’ll keep it for myself for that reason alone.

Still pining for a Linnstrument but I’ll manage.

Funnily enough, I just grabbed a Marantz cd player (second hand) to replace a broken Harman/Kardon one. Arrived today!

The Harman/Kardon died on me a couple of months ago when I was trying to put on an Adele cd I got from the local library. I guess that was where it drew the line: ”You’re NOT fucking going to listen to Adele, not on my watch.” The first cd I put on the Marantz was Ae’s Untilted, and it seems happy. :slightly_smiling_face:
