i’ve been just a reader for a while, but I wanted to throw my hat in the ring for this. been going alright on avoiding new gear so i figure i can make it the whole year.
As this thread suggests, some people have a hard time with GAS
I’m just contributing something constructive that doesn’t necessarily require spending money. His whole channel is literally about GAS therapy.
Just today I accidentally watched a video on Enjoy’s Reminder delay/multieffect. At first I felt that I wanted one, no, I NEEDED one, but then I started rationalizing it and realized that I can basically build the same functionality into one of my Boss GT-1000 Core patches. A filter, a double delay that syncs to the beat and a reverb. It won’t have the beautiful, satisfyingly clicky big knobs and hands on controls but soundwise it’ll be basically just the same thing but with a better reverb and even more tweakability than the Reminder.
Anytime I have gas, I just need to figure out a way to achieve the same thing with what I have and owning a couple of flagships like the aforementioned Boss, MPC Live, and Roland V-Synth makes basically almost anything achievable.
Was wondering the same thing? Maybe something I did, when editing the first post? Anyhow, I’ll remove it now.
There used to be the trademark symbol, right? Or did I imagine it there?
Interesting channel idea!
Well done everyone who made 4 months and especially those who didn’t but are still going with NGNY22. Keep on keeping on…
Free if you have a computer…hell, a phone or tablet.
Who doesn’t have one of those three. Or all three. if you DONT have any of those three, first, you’re not reading this, second, the Syntakt is cheaper than getting a computer + DAW. dude doesn’t get it. what he did get, was a thumbs down from me
But it’s the UX that makes the diff.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
The best cure for GAS is time.
I buy almost exclusively second hand gear. Today there was a Waldorf Micro Q and a Korg MS2000R for sale in my hometown Turku for 250€/a pop. I saw the ad and climbed back downstairs to work on my comic books and records. When I came up the next time, both of them had been sold. They both were worth about double the asking price so someone made a good purchase today, I’m just happy it wasn’t me.
I do it all the time. I see something interesting for a good price. I just let time go and someone else purchases it. Problem solved, until the next one appears.
I once decided to wait on buying a Dreadbox Typhon new until the special edition (with a nicer colour scheme) was available again. By the time it was, I no longer wanted it.
I’m going to drop out of the NGNY22. It’s a fun experiment for me but It made me realize I don’t actually have a problem with my gear acquisitions. I had no difficulties in not buying gear up to this point. In other words, I have self control if/when I need it.
I still found it helpful me to solidify that I need to make sure that my reasons for a piece of gear make sense.
The reasons that are leading me to drop out.
I love drum machines and still plan to have a great collection to ride until the end.
I potentially found a MFB Tanzbär for a reasonable (compared to current prices) price. With MFB himself passing away recently I can see these just continuing to skyrocket in price (MM & MD style).
If I want one (and I definitely do) this might be my last chance.
The other reason is that the RE-808 cases could be finished sometime this year and if they are I want to jump on those as well. I think after the RE-808, those guys might start to call it quits (one already did after the RE-909). At that point it could become difficult to get everything that is needed to make one. This once again may be my only chance at having a real 808 and I don’t want to miss it.
I could stay until those things happen, but it’s easier for me to just drop out now. The Tanzbär is most like going to happen anyway.
Good luck to the rest of you, I’m sure you can do it! Make sure to really think about your purchase choices and always think creatively about what you already have first.
I’ll come back and check on this thread once in a while
Sad to see you go, but when you have it under control, there really is no need to do a strict program like this. Good to hear - and do stick around
Do you want to stay on the list, but with the sin noted?
Thanks for this thread and for helping people to live better lives!
I will!
I can still help others overcome unnecessary urges. I also learn a lot from everyone in this thread and the importance of being honest to yourself.
Keep strong everyone who knows deep down they need this! I’ve read so many empowering stories and watched people grow. I want to hear more
Great to hear this. This is the aim of the thread for me. I never intended to never buy gear again, just to get the obsession under control and be able to make reasoned purchases, and sales when appropriate.
Personally I need a longer period of not buying gear and I’ll try to manage the whole year.
My attitudes have definitely changed but I need to keep them changed!
It sounds like the right approach for you. If no gear becomes what you’re used to, buying gear will feel strange.
If/when you do it, you’ll really think it through and know that it’s for a real reason and not just GAS talking.
On top of that, you’ll know how to control it when you need to. All because you’re so experienced from this year of self induced self control practice.
I know financial concerns are a part of it too. When this year ends, you’ll think about what you might want. Make a plan on how much you can save and how long that will take you.
When you have the money saved up, if you still want it, it’s probably a good choice.
gotta say the soma terra announcement gave me a little tingle, but i didn’t sign up for the list. it looks cool, and i definitely don’t need it.
This has been key to halting GAS for me. I’ve muted nearly all the threads on here and only watch videos on kit I actually have, or listen to DJ or live sets. I haven’t really got stuck into any production yet, but I definitely don’t have runaway GAS anymore.
I don’t think considered purchases like yours are harmful at all, especially since you’ve actually produced a good amount of music with what you have/had. In my case all I produced was debt, anxiety, and a bunch of setup pictures and hot air theorizing on here and elsewhere. Oh and the odd 16 bar loop
I failed :(. Found an OP-1 for 640 that included the case and had a $200 visa gift car that expires next month
That said, it was a good run!
That is one hell of a temptation - I can understand why that went wrong. I’ll remove you
I’ve been making “ceramic” sounds with the A4 mk2 for the past few hours.
It has taken me quite some time to unlock it’s potential with textures and evolving sounds but lately there has been some real break throughs.
I can see myself making the rest of the year without any new purchases bcs zero interest in gear and no GAS. It’s also easy to picture this going past 2022 too since it has been so much easier without the constant hassle.
Learning new things with the existing gear is so rewarding.
