Cool, yeah definitely was think about a poly synth

yeah, sounds like a polysynth would be a great addition.

I also recommend looking into the digital side of things, would complement your existing setup perhaps more than an analogue poly… something like a virus might indeed be great, or M1/wavestation/D-05, if you are into that sorta sounds… Or a nice FM synth, there are loads of various options for FM synths for cheap on the secondhand market.

Do you enjoy programming your own sounds? Any user interface preferences you’d prefer to have on the unit?

Yeah don’t mind programming my own sounds

Not sure about interface, something well laid out etc

How about the deepmind 12d anyone got this or had experience with that machine?

Poly. What is your desk size and budget?

I have no firsthand experience with the deepmind, but find its oscillator waveform and filter options slightly limiting, at least on paper. Bet it sounds decent though.

If you want a cheap vintage poly that’s also reliable, then go for an Alpha Juno 1. One of the last remaining undiscovered gems.

Up to 600, cheaper the better tho
I like to keep a nice footprint for my gear, don’t want anything too big

I use to have an op1 which was cool but want something else

Novation mininova?

i wouldnt buy synth on budget
find one that you are in love with… whos sonic character really appeals to you
safe up for that
and than stick to it
otherwise the what to buy next question will rise again and again

Jeeez! That Alpha Juno 1 sounds amazing. I’ve never listened to it before really. Good suggestion!

They also age really well. The Alphas don’t suffer from failed voice chips like the 6/60/106 tends to do and even though the buttons look like membrane switches, there are actually individually sealed mechanical switches below the plastic.

The only thing that tends to break is the aftertouch on the Alpha Juno 2, but I would recommend a 1 anyway because they’re a bit more compact.

The backlight uses an EL foil that‘s easy to replace if you have a soldering iron (you can get them from Ersatzleuchtfolien), but the display is perfectly usable without backlight as well.

You are also not that hard to take apart and clean if you get hold of one that’s all dusty.

There are a lot of programmer options available these days, bot as iPad apps as well as hardware boxes. I tried the MIDI Club JunoCTRL and the Dtronics DT-300. Both do the job, but I prefered the JunoCTRL because it uses multi-position switches for most discrete parameters while the DT-300 uses continues sliders for those.

I did en up selling both programmers after a few weeks because I’m so used to programming it with its Alpha Dial which actually works really well.

The most interesting features of this synth (on top of what the 6/60/106 already offered) are the strange waveshape variants including a unique PWM on the saw wave and the seven-stage envelopes. Another nice feature is that the chorus rate goes from 0 to 127 instead of only having 3 options.

Oh, and Roland made this really cool AB-3 hardshell carrying case for it:
