Newbie Wanting TUTORIAL on Sequencing to External

Newbie to the Digitakt 2. I just bought one today, and I want to use it as a Sequencer to play parts from my Roland Keyboard ie: I want to play eg: Piano parts from the Roland kybrd, record the performance in Digitakt 2, and then have the D2 play back that Piano performance using the sounds in the Roland. So far I’ve started looking at this Tutorial

from Digitakt, but it focuses on the Internal sounds etc…can anyone point me to a Tutuorial on using the D2 more as a standalone Sequencer which will play sounds from external synths etc. All suggestions appreciated…

Welcome @VK.
Won’t make a proper tutorial but basically:

  • Set track 8 to Midi track
  • Choose channel 8 on SRC page
  • Choose channel 8 on Roland kb
  • Connect Midi out to Midi in both ways

Done.

(On the Roland you’d may want to set to Local Off, and disable Soft Thru is enabled)

Thanks for your suggestion Sezare56. I’m going to take some time and try to figure this all out.

My main thing is that I don’t do DJ type of performance, or Dance music per se…I’m an ‘old school’ songwriter, and although I’ve been using computers and such since back in the 1980s; Atari ST with Steinberg Pro24, Logic & other DAWs since inception, I’m having a headspin with some of this newer equipment. I should say that I bought the D2 for it’s sequencing ability, NOT for it’s onboard sounds…that said, I’m sure I’ll use the Sampler function to add spice once I get the basics sorted.

I’m also having problems trying to set the Midi TX/Rcv channel from my new Roland VR09 kybrd, which is the unit I want to use for performing the parts (eg; Piano, Bass, whatever) and then have the D2 play them back as I do solo gigs with me on Guitar/Vocals. I’ll have an Alesis SR18 Drum Machine synced to the rig as well. It’s a maelstrom trying to navigate online searches in Forums/tutorials/videos etc.

I guess it’s going to be a steep learning curve, and hopefully I’ll eventually get it all setup to a sweet spot. Cheers…

ezbot makes reliable tutorials, I have not watched this but it’s guaranteed to have everything you need.

Digitakt 2 Live Lesson: Sampling and Sequencing Your Synthesizers

Never heard of this person but likely another take on the same information, this time with a minilogue.

There are a lot of people on this forum and youtube who make great tutorials and will cover a broader usage of the device, but since you’re asking specifically about midi setup check out those 2 which I found on youtube by entering digitakt 2 midi tutorial into the search bar.

Good luck and enjoy!

I appreciate all the suggestions here, but those videos go into assigning CCs, Mods, Parameters Etc etc…I still don’t see anything on how to basically use the sequencer as a sequencer, to record and playback a Piano part. At this early stage of my DT2 I’m only wanting to use the Sequencer…as a sequencer…I don’t need to control parameters or such on my Roland VR09…I just want to sequence the parts. All these DT2 videos dive right into the deep-end of parameters, CCs, LFOs and the like…at the risk of repeating myself I just want to use the Sequencer to record/playback what I play.

The MIDI learn video posted by shigginpit goes into the basic setup before it gets to assigning MIDI CCs etc.

To summarize:

  • Connect up your MIDI cables (out to in, both ways).
  • Assign the MIDI Machine to a track (easiest if this matches the MIDI channel).
  • Set up the MIDI send channel on the [SRC] page.
  • Ensure the Digitakt is set to receive MIDI on the same channel for that track in the channels setup menu.
  • Set the Digitakt to record mode (rec+play for live entry or rec+stop for step sequencing).
  • Play the synth.

Thank you Scyhpozoa…I’ll explore more. I think it’ll take a bit of fussing around, as my Roland VR09 is also new to me, and even trying to set a Midi TX channel is not as straight forward as I’ve experienced with other kybrds over the years…the VR09 has several options regarding Splits and such, which I’m trying to get sorted via Roland Forums…but that’s not getting any feedback yet. I’m sure it’ll be ok in the end… Thanks again
