So ive managed to set digitakt 2 as master and digitone 2 as slave, and use the digitakt to sequence some tracks from digitone, playing keyboard on digitakt it plays the digitone, but for instance if you had a synth keyboard how would you do the same , but be able to play synth keyboard so it records into digitakt sequence as at the moment when i play the digitone keyboard it doesn’t record that into digitakt sequence only when playing digitakt .
Hope that makes sense
Thanks
Hi, if your question specifically is how you can do this using your exact setup and using the digitone 2 as a keyboard for the digitakt 2, you need to make sure that the digitakt is enabled for note receive and that the digitone’s outgoing midi channel aligns with the digitakt’s auto channel settings so that when you play the digitone, the digitakt will respond by sending the midi notes to the active track.
You also would need to make sure that the digitone’s trig key destination in the midi settings is set to both internal and external, which means that the trig keys will also send outgoing midi notes when played in chromatic mode and not just send notes to the internal synth. If you’re having trouble not getting it to trigger the internal synth you can set it to external only but just remember that you’ve done it in the event you want to switch it back.
Also, of course, you need a midi cable going from the digitone 2’s midi out to the digitakt 2’s midi in but I think that part is obvious.
If you basically want to keep your workflow but ‘improve’ the keys aspect of the DTii which is playing the DNii then you can connect the MIDI keys/synth to the DTii and use the Auto Channel feature of the Elektrons
So you would look at the MIDI channel config of the DTii and see which (unique) channel number is assigned as Auto Channel
On your External Keys, set that to be the transmission Channel of that device
Now when the DTii is on any given track, the external keys acts as a substitute for the DT internal keys
You can set this up without having the DN connected - this is about improving the user input wrt the keyboard on the DTii, so you keep everything set as you currently have it … the Synth is not talking to the DN, it’s acting as a front end for the DT only - the DT will not transmit on the AutoChannel - it uses the unique auto channel assignment to establish a connection to it which then acts as if you pressed the DTii keyboard trigs
You do not assign any other track to the Auto Channel number on DTii (it’s irrelevant wrt ‘connected’ DNii)- it must be unique amongst DTii channel assignments - if you chose Auto Channel 13 e.g. then the only other assignment of 13 should be on your external Synth/Keybed
Think of Auto Channel as being a remote control path from the outside > in … DT will not transmit on that channel ID, it will transmit on the channel assignment of the midi track, just as it did before assigning the external keyboard to take control of keyboard input, you can use the external keys and the DTii keyboard interchangeably thereafter
When you change tracks on the DTii the external keyboard will talk to that track
If you want the ext kbd to only talk to a specific track, then you set a matching midi channel on the ext keyboard to the one the track will be listening on (i.e. not using auto channel to automate this)
Set things up on the DTii first … see if you can get the ext keys to talk to whichever internal audio DT track you have in focus … then just carry on with your workflow with the MIDI tracks
So say for instance, if i had a artura microfreak i could record in the patches from the freak into the sequence of the digitakt 2…
You can record in keyboard input as per any regular midi keyboard
you can play in sequences too
but the resolution of the transmitting sequencer and receiving step sequencer may differ, so there may be a different outcome and that’s all assuming you have the receiving sequencer tempo matched to the transmitting one
why not start with the basics (getting external keyboard input sorted) , then try the sequencer ‘feed’ … but start with a regular quantized step at the same step rate from sending to receiving (i.e. for simplicity synchronize the DTii to the MF for the purposes of capture, but then disable clock rcv on the DTii when captured in favour of using the DTii clock to control the DNii)
If you try other strategies it will get messy without some confidence or awareness in what you’re trying … it would also need some degree of control of how to filter incoming clock from being sent in a loop
start simple, then add complexity and be aware of the potential of loops
if the MF can receive clock, but discard sending it on, then you may have longer term options for how to make a neat setup where the DT clock goes to the DN and thru to the MF but stops there
there are options and other ways to manage midi signals, but get it doing the basics first
Hi sorry, I’ve not replied, been a bit busy this weekend, hopefully I’ll get some time tomorrow night to have a play round with the midi settings
Thanks
So I’m nearly there… set up digitone 2 with digitakt 2 matched both auto channels
On the digitakt I’ve made track 16 a midi track and used track 8 on the digitone, so i can play track 16 on digitakt to play track 8 on digitone, i can record on digitakt play the track 16 nd it records digitone track 8 to digitakt sequencer, but if i try doing the same but playing digitone track 8 it doesn’t record to digitakt sequence…just wanted to know how to do this , so if i get a minifreak i can play and record the minifreak keyboard into the digitakt sequence
