I’ve got the moondrop, its great but I’d love a pitch control on it

If they do leave the game, I hope the make the firmware open source for their synths.

This will be a real loss to musicians. No other company has the same weird combo of Apple-like ability to make high-end, bespoke hardware, with the willingness to build really weird, out-there ideas.

Plus their UI/interaction designs are amazing. Apart from the XY’s stupid small fonts.

Edited to add, imagine if the music-lovers at TE left, hooked up with @Ess, and made TE-level hardware with Ess/Fors software.

Honestly I hope they don’t stop and will support the existing ones for a long time…

Are they using synthesizers as a catch all for music electronics cause they never really made a proper synth did they?

hahaha

This article does however explain A LOT for me about how certain products end up existing. And in the scope of how that works, I guess it makes some sense for them to quit making synths. But also feels like something that might get reversed the second someone ends up having a synth idea that Jesper really likes

Not sure I could work for a company like that

he is building the foundation to sell…

he cannot sell Synths and music gadgets, nobody would buy today in the current economic landscape, so needs to be something else he is getting into, get the right value and resell to a big company and than retire…

He seems way too invested into what the company does for that, might just be that he doesn’t want the company to get pidgeonholed into music gear, can probably sell tables etc for higher price than hobbyist size music gear

I was never really convinced by TE anyway… they were more fun and silly then actual deep devices I could grow with… I have liked some of them, I have never loved anything they have done though. So I would be kind of glad. Sorry…

But those ‘fun and silly devices’ are what gets some people into music production…Not sure many would start off on those ‘deep devices’. TE probably hold the world record for highest amount of FW updates on the OP-1 (compare that to Elektron and their half arsed FW updates - Digitakt etc).

i sorta get the point of TE being fun and silly, but on the other hand op1f has become my one and only signal source for OT, and now Tonverk for further sampling, and those 3 boxes now completely cover my “music” making itch. still overwhelmed by the possibilities

i’m not a professional by any stretch though

My level of concern is exactly zero.

If this is true, I think this really sucks, but very well might be necessary given whatever future resources & $ are accessible for them, including presumable major future music production innovations at a regular pace with open source music software & hardware.

this is the second time that jesper has alluded to something that will revolutionize the way we use the internet. and his quote in the article that it will come out sometime in the next 5 to 10 years sounds completely crazy- trying to imagine the pace of progress for tech in that time… maybe he has something truly revolutionary, and maybe he needs to pivot his company immediately to fund or focus on whatever his idea is but… sounds to me like we have some years left here with them continuing to make music machines?

TE does whatever TE wants to do and that’s fine with me, even if they stop making synths or instruments altogether. That’s life.
They made the OP-1f, which is my favorite instrument of all time, the OP-XY which is my favorite drum machine, and the TX-6, which is the most practical mixer and multi track sound interface I know (for my purposes). I’ll be fine if they’ll continue to be able to repair these for me.
However, I remember when they announced the og OP-1 would go out of production and they brought it back a few years later. If anything, we can expect to be surprised whatever they turn out to be up to in the future.

You forgot your favorite speaker in that list :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:.

Whatever it is they do, I hope they stay alive as a company so that they can fix these expensive devices many of us had bought in the future if they ever break. If they do indeed stop making music machines, I would like it if some of the people that made these devices join Elektron or other cool companies and continue their work there. I can’t see how somebody who has focused on that for ten years now will pivot to something completely different, but who knows, maybe they’re bored and excited to try out something new.

Maybe the synth nerds bullied them too hard for their trustie hipster identity

My guess is that he didn’t mean “synths” very specifically and literally, but music making machines in general.

They’ve painted themselves into a corner with opxy. It’s the most normal synthy instrument they’ve made with very little of their usual quirkiness. Everyone is clamouring for more norm core updates for it like more synths, drum synths etc. I suspect it’s a position they’d rather not be in. Maybe they’re trying to drive a wedge in expectations between themselves and the ‘synth’ industry

The most undeserved h8 TE gets is for the pocket operators

Those things are cool as hell. That I can have a mini sampler in my pocket that’s just capable enough to make a workable jungle tune, and quite intuitive to boot is a dream. The accusations of “fast fashion gear” and “hipster toy” is unappreciative imo

I was hoping for a 2nd gen of them that had an extra knob and an LFO

EDIT: Oh and of course an extra port for MIDI jack sync
