New academic paper on gear fetishism

I think it’s meant to be a parody of an academic paper. Either that, or the hegemonic modalities of homologous convergence hastens the theoretical post-structural archetypes of irreducible differentiation.

I told my wife that I was called macho for the first time in my life. We both had a hearty laugh and then I donned the kitchen apron and began cooking dinner. I’ll probably take the MX-5 out for a nice sunset drive later and maybe clean my guns or play a synth after.

This thread is becoming incomprehensible, it’s like lots of random words and I can’t get any meaning or message out of the chaos

Would you like to go for a drive?

at least we agree on disagreeing huh , hey that’s better than nothing right… buuuut
I don’t think I painted her as a victim, I think you painted her as not being able to function while knowing better, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt but I know that I cannot decide for you what you do and do not know… I just thought you couldn’t possibly believe that she doesn’t know what a woman is and that it was kind of a weird thing to use as a basis for your analogy cause imo its clearly a red herring… I also thought it was common knowledge that the people asking her that question were disingenuous to the 9th degree… I also do not think she is a victim because those Moses Fleetwood Walker, Jackie Robinson type personalties of which she is also don’t let would be victimizers like the Blackburns and Hawleys of the world control the narrative, and in justice Brown’s case they do it with poise and grace.

as far as your question, I agree with you about what you call objects if you’re in your house, but if you’re in someone else’s house or in a public space I don’t see the harm in showing some empathy, it always worked on leave it to beaver and although society is a lot more diverse now a days it still sounds like a good idea imo

btw, the digitakt is still god though

Yeah that’s something I guess.

To be clear I said: Seeing the leading judge of the American supreme court being unable to tell what a woman means. You framed your reply so that I have suggested that she doesn’t know what a woman is, which is false bcs I never did. It’s better to read ppls words properly to avoid putting words into their mouth and then arguing against that. That is a well known tactic called strawmanning.

I never stated that the judge doesn’t know what a woman means but again, I pointed out the silly situation the western world has found itself in.

If this is not victimizing I don’t know what is:

“these are people that don’t even want her to have the right to vote and if she does they want to make it extremely difficult, they don’t even want her to be able to hydrate herself with water while going through the obstacles they’ve placed in her path to vote…”

C’mon man. This judge is a highly educated well to do person, not some lost little puppy you know? She is the leading judge in the supreme court ffs and she’s playing the game.

I can see that you mean well and I respect that but as our ways of thinking don’t really overlap much this isn’t really going anywhere.

I think I get your point and at this point it’s fair to suspect that you get mine as well.

the whole premise of your analogy was clear and you’re not even mincing words you’re mincing syllables there is no difference between what a woman means and what a woman is in the context of this discussion so I don’t know what you’re talking about in that regard…

your response about the voting issue makes it seem like you don’t actually know what I’m talking about because it has nothing to do with how well to do she is or that she’s not a lost puppy , it has everything to do with polling sites being closed so that it’s more difficult for people that look like her to get to them and also take longer to get through them do to longer waiting times, and those people questioning her even want to induce exhaustion in people trying to exercise their right to vote… For example in Georgia it’s illegal to give people who are standing in line food and water.

anyway underneath it all, I do think we understand each other, however I don’t think any of that had anything to do with what we call objects…
I only spoke up cause of the diatribe about her not being able to function in connection to that ridiculous line of questioning by those that I thought were clearly not functioning properly at her confirmation hearing, it just struck me kind of odd lol…

Coolio. :joy:

btw are you from the states, because I know we’ve got an international forum here but since you had brought the judge up I assumed you were, and might have been mistaken?

Also, this is not a problem in Asia and they are laughing at us and shaking their heads in disbelief.

I’m from Finland but like Rammstein put it, “we’re all living in Amerika”

ohhh, ok then it’s possible that you’re not as saturated in our voting rights dynamics as I thought you were my bad, one things for sure though Rammstein wasn’t lying. Finland is definitely more invested in what kind of senators we have over here questioning Supreme Court justices than usual these days… I bet you guys can’t wait to see what happens in 2024 after all of this Ukrainian madness… anyways guess We’ve veered off course enough, let me try to Get back on topic…

Ah, “Asia”, notoriously a monoculture with regards to gender roles and “no problems” whatsoever! < / sarcasm >

Problems exist when people are incurious and narrowminded about how they exclude others (and hostile towards the very implication that there are occasional problems and gatekeeping), that’s the basis for this particular topic.

I’m not saying Elektronauts is worse than other sites, scale definitely helps with culture!

“I don’t want to make this place suck” is really all we can hope for

How to suck less is the goal and purpose of these questions. Asking awkward questions and being honest less about motives than the effect of various cultural artifacts. Biases get brought in, other behaviors are repeated, but in aggregate people do get excluded on webforum discussions because of patterns. We can surely get rid of some of the anti-patterns and not lose the “community” or absolutely anything of worth!

Heck, Gearspace and Modwiggler are better to read than in the past, and I’m certain that well beyond the namechanges a lot of past posters there would howl and stomp their feet at the default behavior being less edgelord-y.

To add a comment which I don’t think has been covered here so far.

Governments around the world are currently putting in place mechanisms which really threaten research quality. Many researchers are experiencing financial structures that encourage more and more papers to be submitted (or penalise departments if this does not occur). There are two harmful outcomes of this. One is that more papers are being submitted before they are ready. The other is that all of us have less time to review others’ papers (since we have to prioritise our time to writing our own) and hence the peer review system is breaking down, often leading to less oversight of papers by reviewers, and hence a lowering of overall quality. I didn’t think that the paper linked by the OP was that great (and I’m sometimes involved in research of that style) - but governments have a major role to play in lower quality papers coming out because of the structures they have imposed on research.

“The attribution or delegation of agency to technological objects (Law, 2009), whether the object is a crafted fetisso designed to resist Portuguese colonialism (Pietz, 1985), a mixing console that indexes desires amongst South African recording studio professionals to participate more fully in a global music market (Meintjes, 2003), or a piece of gear regarded as ‘sexy’ in an online forum, involves the intersection between the crafting of object aesthetics and industrial-era animist forms of magic.”

Holy crap what gobbeldy gook. It’s like they are actively trying to not be understood.

Also, no real academic rigor here. Just proceeding on the assumption that online gear forums are all dudes without any sort of data to back it up. They also seem to misunderstand the culture on these forums. Yes, some gear these days is really nice looking, but the whole “sexy” gear thing I’ve always took as a bit tongue in cheek.

Finally, how boring. There are probably lots of interesting angles to explore on this topic. Instead they just shoehorned a woke take as an answer to a question no one was asking.
