Nektar Panorama or other controller

Hi People,
Any Elektron users out there using a Nektar Panorama controller?
I may be in the market for a new controller, and I was wondering how well the Nektars work with Elektron machines?

This may be a silly question, but when you map a pot or slider, can you name it, so that it shows the name of the function, say “Filter Res” rather than just a CC number.

Also, can you have multiple pages, so that you could have a page for the amp section, a page for the lfo section, etc.?

The new Akais look nice, but from what I can see from videos and reviews, you can’t rename the control…so it just shows as “Pot 1” and a CC number rather than something meaningful.

thanks
Eric

Hi,
I cant answer your questions - but I ones tried the Panorama and I didn’t like it because of the keyboard. it’s to heavy weighted for me. I need a keyboard with very light response. I have a kurzweil 2500 - allso semi-weighted witch is a little lighter but still to heavy.for me. So… try -out the keyboard sensetivity to see if it suits you before buying. Apparently " SEMY - WEIGHTED " can be found in many different degrees.

I never really understood all these weighted keyboards for synth-use - besides if you wanna play piano by synth. I prefer the organ keyboards - they have a immediate response - ideal for percussive and extreme-fast playing.

Got mysel a Ak after testing and it’s one of the best keyboards I’ve ever played … for my taste…

I have elektron machines and the Panorama, though I havent yet come around to using them together. I once sent a mail to Nektar asking about these thing. Here is the answer i got:

I use my Panorama with an Octatrack and an Analog Four. They work quite well together. The experience isn’t the same as using the Panorama with Reason, you don’t get parameter feedback or soft-takeover features but it’s very nice to use the fader section as kind of a mixer for the Octatrack.
Here is a link to the Octatrack template: Hardware Template: Elektron Octatrack
I had been working on a similar template for Analog Four and Analog RYTM but once they announced Overbridge, I decided to hold off until I see what we can do with that.

Not sure about naming controlls, I swear I once saw a guide on how to make your own mappings with something looking like XML where you could name stuff. But I cant find it now.
I sent them another email asking about it.

I’m not too fussed about the keyboard action TBH. I’m actually not too fussed if there is a keyboard.

The Panorama template looks interesting, it’s the kind of thing I’m talking about, but I’d like to know if the display shows the parameter name. It’s a lot easier to look at a display and go straight to the “Cutoff” knob that thinking “Christ, what did I map Pot 5 to again” or “Umm what’s CC xx again?”

I know the Panorama won’t automatically pick up parameter names like it does with a VST, but if they could be edited manually, that would be OK.

It’s a small thing, but i don’t think you can do it with the new Akai pad controllers and it would have been useful to me. Also a shame that the P1 doesn’t have MIDI.

I can’t even find a video on t’web showing a Nektar controlling hardware, it all seems to focus on Software & VSTs. :disappointed:

Personally I would take a long look at this :

I wouldn’t worry about being able to name the knobs . Just design your template and then play…you will very quickly develop muscle memory for where everything is, even with something like this which gives full programmability of 264 controls.

Got an answer from Nektar:

You will only see parameter names on Panorama’s display in Mixer, Instrument or Transport mode, and only when the host application is communicating with Panorama as a control surface, using our DAW integration.

When using Panorama in Internal mode, as a normal MIDI controller, you cannot name parameters. Unfortunately Panorama doesn’t have sufficient on-board memory to store custom names for each control.

If you want to make you own assignments in Internal mode, you can do so in Panorama’s Control Edit menu. You can read more about the Control Edit menu, here: Internal modeInternal mode

So no naming of parameters :frowning:
Im sure they will make mappings for overbridge though.

I must have dreamt up the mapping stuff… this is strange.
