Got my first comp coming in about 1.5 weeks and have been getting worse at training. Been stiffer, move slower, gas out faster. How would you get past this mental block?
No earth shattering advice here but I would suggest sleeping right, eating right, and meditation if you can fit it in. Do deep breathing. Train lightly and flow roll. Do you workout in addition to BJJ? Maybe only go 80% but stay consistent.
This is advice coming from a middle aged dude who has been training BJJ for less than a year. If you’re in your 20s, train like a wrestler who is fighting wild dogs. Push yourself, gas out every session, assert dominance:)
From a psychological standpoint, it might simply be the nerves/tension that makes you stiffer and gas out faster. In addition to the advice above, specifically avoid alcohol.
Furthermore, I feel like this is a natural thing to go through. I only just started my own BJJ journey at 39, but do have some boxing experience. Main two things that helped me were simply exposure (you do get used to the anticipatory stress) and most of all deciding that I would be going to enjoy the process regardless of the result. In fact, I found that there are incredibly valuable lessons in losing a match….it has definitely made me a better fighter.
Good luck mate, Oss!
