The first spark for the album came from a simple plan to meet for a drink after a gig. I (Circuit3) and Mat Smith from the Mortality Tables imprint ended up talking about trauma, therapy, and the parts of ourselves we usually keep out of sight. That conversation led to a small, recorded experiment which developed into an album project.
Midway through the project I was asked if I was open to collaboration with another artist. Not knowing who Mat had in mind the ‘synth blind date’ turned out to be Vince. I’m glad I said ‘yes’.
We created an 11 minute piece titled ‘The Hope’, named after the bar near Farringdon, London where that first conversation happened. Across 11 minutes, it builds a melodic drone landscape that holds both hopelessness and hope at the same time.
The album Metanoia is not a linear or predictable account of trauma, breakdown, and recovery. Instead, it moves through a series of moments and memories that surfaced during therapy.
intro synths are brilliant, quality, has originality and High-Level sounddesign, great contrast …off to a great epic start
we are over two minutes inn and Im not bored (unusual for a long intro) Im more intrigued to whats goin to come of this , ust feels sooo epic … the build up has harmonious tempo … nothing feels rushed or long winded …
we are now at 4 minutes and a new sound has been introduced (not a total fan of another ambient wave tone here … would have loved an arp line or some sort of strong vibe to contrasting the evolving intro as I assume a flawless 909 beat is going to drop …
now at 6 minutes and its turning out to be some sort of slow berlin-school with a cute little arp (not too thrilled about the arp…everything else is so big sounding but this isn’t going to drop into an epic dance floor thriller at this point as I was expecting…
That fast FX arp that comes in and out sound brilliant and all the sounddesign is superb …yet (IMO that VA sounding (short decay stabb quacking sound and the small arp sound …just felt like it could be replaced by a huge West-coast modline/riff and a strong melodic stabbline/ hook + a banging 909 beat with toms &hihatz rools… I mean we are at the end now past 10min and a very bad filter cut-off opening was kinda the peak of the outro…
Verdict:
For what it was it was epic! really epic !!
Sorry about my realtime impression/expecting a memorable 42thefloor banger … that dissatisfaction was not really called for in hindsight (seeing it never reached dance rhythms) the arp was in turn actually really wonderfull … but that stabby hybrid sound sounded out of place (wasn’t a fan of its reverb tail either) and that filter opening in the end wasn’t really on mutator quality level or on par vs the rest of the sounddesign which was just top stuff
But again my nitpicking aside it was really a wonderful journey …an after party’s poetry level, congratts
Reflecting on how others have responded to this track I realise that putting it in context is probably a good idea. The entire album is a very digestible 40 minutes-ish and The Hope is the closer. It rounds out the ‘story’ although this isn’t a linear story.
