Music player for kids

I no longer have a CD/vinyl/cassette collection. My eldest son, 7, enjoys listening to music and so far I’ve just played him music from my streaming service. I’d like him to start having some independence in his musical choices. What are my options here? A phone is out of the question and starting a CD collection is not really a practical option. Any suggestions?

An old iPod? Not sure how you get files on there these days…

My kids (6 & 10) have gotten into Spotify quite a bit and it’s fun to see them build playlists etc even if we are reluctant towards screen time. Their taste in music is a different topic but I’m just happy we all agree on Kraftwerk.

I just gave my kid an Echo speaker in his room maybe 10 years back linked to our Spotify account (and eventually his own via their family package). That way he could stream his own stuff from the age of 9/10. As he approaches adulthood, his taste a few years on is exquisite and incredibly wide ranging and eclectic, as he basically just spent a decade exploring limitless music with no guardrails.

For us it worked very good to configure them one of our old Smartphones and simply block all apps except Deezer (can be done very easily via Google Family Link). Add a decent bluetooth box and there you go!

I got my daughter a newer style portable CD player than can also read SD cards, so we can put folders of music and audio books on there for her. She loves it and sometimes looks like she’s straight outta the 90s when she’s walking around with it.

My 3.5 year old rocks this. It has cards for purchase but you can make your own cards form your music collection (or his). I checked the age range its 3-12+. Its great for her, but maybe a little too “kiddie” for your 7 year old?

I still didn’t find anything I like. might have to resort to burning a load of CDs…

Got one each for my two kids:

If you can get over it just being (evil) Spotify it’s very straightforward and they got years of use out of them.
App is slow(ish) and you have to refresh their playlists if you haven’t used them in a while, but otherwise I’d recommend.
