Is anybody still using MPC OS 2.XX with their MPC Live 3?? Is it possible?
I’m still not getting the hang of MPC3 at all…not even worried about the glitches, MPC3 ruins the CPU usage, I can’t do nearly what I used to do with half the usage of what I can do on MPC 2.9
Basically I hate that I’m stuck in 2.9 still but I guess this is all I’m going to deal with until 3.0 shows itself to me. I still love my MPC, but it would be nice to have those fancy plug ins
You really need to ask AKAI support that question, I think it’s me earlier who pointed out that someone tried that and something didn’t work, but I’m not sure if the discussion was on reddit or mpcforum. I would not attempt to do that if I had the Live III personally but only AKAI themselves can tell you for sure.
valid, just thought I’d check if anyone were up to it in here
all my friends are hyping me up for the MPC Live3 but I really don’t care for it. If they made it without the speaker I’d be interested. Who needs a little speaker for performing “Live”?? Never understood the branding of that unit. The Live 1 is the perfect size imo.
I didnt at first but now i actually use it quite a lot, glad its there and im sure it will be even better when i take the time to organise a bigger library of my own stuff
Took me almost 3 weeks of solely just focusing on the MPC to really understand it. And I’ve owned MPCs since 2000.
But now that I found my flow, I can’t imagine going backwards.
The biggest challenge I had with the MPC3 is there’s like 4 or 5 different ways to work - strictly sequences, clips, the arranger, the arranger + clips, etc
Finding the right workflow for me and my music was challenging and frustrating. But once I found it, boom. This thing is sick and does exactly what I want it to do
That’s one of best & worse things about Akai.
You can also disregard the Tempo & just work with recording live audio.
I was just watching a video of someone changing their workflow because they have a better understanding of the clips. He still has more to learn like using the Action Follows like suggested to him, but I’ve been seeing my prediction come true a lot lately about how many MPC users would fall in love with clips & the matrix:
Now that I’m figuring out the MPC3, I added my DT2 to the mix. I create all the drum loops on the DT2 by loading up banks with similar drums and sweeping through the bank with the LFO to create unique percussion, bass, and synth loops - fun stuff. Put that in the MPC and run with it
The new Visual EQ on the MPC makes a great high and low pass filter btw
Also explored making my first FX chains on the MPC. Controlling multiple FX with one knob is awesome. I had the Force for a long time but the form factor was just too much to try and figure all that out. The MPC3 makes all that way more accessible for someone old like me…
finally took the 3.6 plunge with my MPC One. i’m sure some of this is just time to rewire the brain to the new workflow but boy it seems cluttered and clunky just to do stuff like basic track editing tasks from 2.x and that never felt like any walk in the park itself
I’m about to do the same with my One Plus. I was going to keep it on the older OS since I have a Live III, but I’ve been very impressed by 3.6, so probably need to bring the One Plus in line. I wonder if I have to buy the Pro Pack, despite owning the III?
You can keep using both OS 2 & 3, just know the Projects save in 3 can’t be used again on 2.0 so save the 3.0 project in their own 3.0 folder or whatever, as 3.0 still in beta regardless of what Akai claims. I’ve had about 10 crashes since updating to Force 3.6. That may just a Force thing but others on the MPC 3.6 have the same issue.
I haven’t had any crashes on Live 3. I thought I did but it was a cable hitting the power button causing it to power down. I wish it was a press and click power button.
I also find it surprising that some people find MPC 3 hard to learn. To me it’s dog easy. So many ways to do things and none of them really complicated. I think it could be complicated if you’re trying to learn everything it does at once but if you simply learn a feature at a time I really can’t imagine how it takes longer than a few sessions to know what you’re doing.
I don’t want to marginalize anyone else’s experience but for me it’s several times simpler and more intuitive than Abelton, Logic, or any DAW and many samplers like SP, MV, etc.
I was a Maschine user of many years and I hear so much copium about how much faster and easy Maschine workflow is. Meh. I agreed with that for MPC 2.x but there is nothing faster or easier than clip matrix and dedicated buttons per feature. Hell naw lol. I think some things get parroted so much people take it as fact. However, I’m also aware we all learn differently and have varying preferences so all opinions and experiences are valid.
In the end, it’s an embarrassment of riches. Modern tech makes the process of expressing oneself easier than ever today. So much power in our hands. None of this stuff is rocket science for those committed to putting in the time or effort.
Yeah. I was delighted to find the clip launcher on MPC Live 3. I’ve always preferred Ableton’s session view and Bitwig’s clip launcher for song construction over an arranger. And then having a more traditional hardware button sequencer for quickly laying out a clip comes in pretty handy, too. And you’re right about all the great dedicated buttons improving the workflow. And the touch strip for setting volume levels is lightning fast.
But I can especially see how people used to MPC 2.x would find it a disconcerting adjustment at first. If that has been there primary mode of song making. It is a big workflow shift.
I can absolutely understand how people with muscle memory for the old platform have a greater challenge to first unlearn and rewire themselves for the new platform in addition to the buttons being scrambled on the new unit.
I was moreso referring to how many folks buy classes, tutoring, and extra books before actually putting any time in to find their own unique voice or workflow but I def respect that we all have our own journey and ways to get about it. Only thing that really matters is having fun and expressing yourself.
