It’s when you have different tracks on the same MIDI port recording MIDI notes at the same time & some notes get cut short by other notes on other tracks. The most basic workaround is to record each one by one. MIDI on data on the port doesn’t cut off each other.
This is MPC & Force bug. I got the Force to move all my music from other devices that I’ve had this bug (& others) made some that should’ve be simple thing like multi-track record MIDI info into the Force a major pain in the a**. This should be a top priority bug to fix, but here we are…years later still dealing with it & now they’re about drop MPC3 & this why telling people who don’t like the new OS to not to upgrade is kinda like a slap in the face, because they may be stuck with those old bugs. Hopefully Akai solves this hot mess.
How common is it to record midi into the MPC from various devices simultaneously? And are all those the same people unwilling to upgrade to the, arguably, best MPC firmware version ever?
Interesting to think why would anyone need to record various midi sources at once into an MPC perhaps if they’re porting over their live set from a different setup and want to do it quicker than recording one by one? Idk. I only write and produce, but don’t perform so it had never occurred to me until now.
Elektron Boxes are great but extremely limited in many ways and often counter intuitive for new users (particularly the 1970s file system and sample transfer) so many tips and tricks are needed. Not so much on the MPC, it can do pretty much everything and is very easy to use…conversations will be different.
This is the second time the MPC thread has reached almost 10 000 Posts so there is obviously a lot of interest in MPCs on the Electron Forum. I don’t think this has anything to do with the ‘legacy’, heritage of MPC as it is now one of the most advanced portable music production system available. MPC3 (with an 8 layer auto sampler, full DAW like arranger and disk streaming to record you 15 minute guitar solo in one take!) can do just about anything a DAW can in a small cheap portable box with mature O/S (expandable with plugins) and well thought out hands on controls…that appeals to many people who don’t want to on a laptop/mouse any more than they have to.
I can’t spend money on hardware from a company that still won’t update 50% of their flagship bundle to have even scalable GUI after like almost a decade
The reason I was recording multiple tracks is because had about 35 beats made on the MPC-2500 & the EMU Proteus-2000 which is a 32 track Rompler (each track is a 4 layered synth). I mostly used about 10 tracks per beat, but each track may have many variations of a riff or whatever. This bug made moving these beats into the Force a bit*h!
Now, if I’m making something new on the Force, this bug wouldn’t be so bad because I would be recording each new track one at a time.
I’ve always wondered what the big big fuss was about to be honest but when you frame it like that’s it makes sense to me that it’s a show stopper in that context, which kinda brings me round to another thing that puzzled me, there was a post a ways up the thread about using a teensy board or something as a usb midi interface that’s kind of a hacky way to get round the problem, wouldn’t a a standard cheap class compliant 1 in 1 out usb midi adapter do the same thing?
Not everybody wants to use the MPC’s internal sequencer, or has the physical ability to play all of their parts in. For me the MPC pads are too hard on my arms and hands so I need to use a gentler input method for notes.
So instead spend money on hardware of a company that hasn’t fixed a glaring midi bug on their midi / music production center?
All good though, I agree, NI can and should do better in a lot of aspects of its business. But the Maschine+ is amazing, really the best groovebox I own.
