MPC Thread : MPC Live - MPC X - MPC One (Part 2)

If you ask me there is way more juice to be had on current specs

For example just general improvements to what is already there: allow automations to not break when using individual track lengths, more button shortcuts, better step sequencer, improved UI consistency, better drum program LFOs etc

And Air Music are shipping some amazing plugins that are running great on it.

Sounds like we have a lot in common and I agree wholeheartedly. The MPC is definitely a ā€œseriousā€ tool that lets you sculpt sounds and shape the overall mix with precision, and to me that’s a huge part of getting a groove going. Other grooveboxes don’t quite come close to this. The Elektron Digi boxes at least have base width filters but I still often find myself wishing I could put a parametric EQ on that muddy bass track right from the outset of the sketching phase, rather than having to live with it until I export a jam into the DAW. Same with the Polyend Tracker+/Mini, they’re even worse in that respect (not even a base width filter on board). The MPC gives you all the essential tools and you have the option of purchasing even better soft synths and effects if you want to. And the workflow is quite fast once you get the hang of it.

The MPC definitely pulls you more in the direction of finishing up a song rather than just jamming over loops. The fact that you can hit Shift+Step Seq to quickly toggle automation write on/off makes it so quick to dial in something approximating either a p-lock or a more gradual automatation curve on the fly.

Yeah these are all quality-of-life improvements they should prioritize. Maybe one day…

I’d love an option to remember which sub-screen you were in when in the Mix window last. If I need to step out to Main to Solo a track, I want to be able to hit Mix again to go right back to the insert fx I was editing. Stuff like that would make the workflow so much quicker. That, or dedicated solo/mute buttons (e.g. the ability to map the otherwise useless +/- buttons to do something else).

That’s probably the Achilles heel of the MPC. Sadly I don’t think it’s even remotely a priority for Akai, but would sure be nice to see a complete overhaul there. Still, the step sequencer is useful for automation editing where you can sort of approximate p-locks too.

This is such a bad joke. So bad in fact that I literally laughed out loud. :joy:

Made a major discovery regarding the 2.15 update - it helps to use the correct power supply with your MPC :man_facepalming:t2::joy:

That could have ended badly, last time it happened to me i fried my mixer 🤦

Oh buddy. Your MPC is not smoking and it’s still in once piece, so in my opinion, you win the day!

Take that, Irony!

And per the update, did it work this time or still unsure?

Odd to me that the marketing page for standalone stems features a One+ with aftermarket knobs

Yeah same, it finally asked to shut down and then it installed

Oy vey. That sound could either be a plus or minus depending on what kind of music you make, but wow. Definitely needs either more refinement or a better processor on the next hardware iterations.

Maybe it’s just me, but I usually download samples to my computer first, and then transfer them over to whatever drive. I’d rather do the stem separation first, so I can discard whatever I don’t need. Lately, I’ve been using Logic’s, but there are so many choices now. My first would not be MPC standalone.

Installed with no issues. Now I’m gonna try and make a girl talk with it. Or maybe I’ll make some 128Kbps MP3s combining different songs from various genres

Awesome! Glad to hear it.

When reading this, I’m imagining something hilarious which you didn’t intend.

That’s a screenshot or photo from the Ski Beatz demo I posted above. That must be his personal ride.

Those are the replacement knobs that they sell on mpcstuff dot com. It is indeed a little odd.

I was imagining you interrogating a girl and using your mpc to ā€œmake her talkā€, like somehow she would be made to spill the beans by use of your newly updated hardware sampler.

Well if I stem out some Merzbow….

This was already the direction I was thinking in. Like one of those movies where the person doesn’t want to talk, and the one interrogator guy nods to the other interrogator’s assistant guy, who then connects the car battery and a shock ensues.

Except instead of a car battery it’s just harsh noise right out of the mpc.

ā€œThink she’ll talk?ā€

ā€œOh, she’ll talk alright. She’ll be singing like a canary in no time.ā€

I didn’t think I would use this stem separator so I didn’t buy. But if it sounds bad………maybe

It is better then you guys make it seem…geez… I’ve been messing with it and you guys made it seem like it sounded horrible but I don’t think it is that bad really… about what I expected.

Yup, mirrors my thoughts exactly. I feel spoiled to have so many different flavors available on one box. Almost every effect type including EQ, distortion, reverb, and even compression has multiple flavors making it very convenient to dial in the texture and vibe I want, even if I’m looking for something very specific. I had been using Elektron gear for so long that two inserts, neighbor tracks, and the master effects on the OT felt like a huge luxury… I also use sends and sub mixes for processing a ton, and now that I’ve used an MPC wonder what excuse other boxes have for not offering similar options at much higher price points.

It’s great being able to distort or bitcrush my reverb and delays a little, compress or duck busses of tracks together, send touches of tracks to a stereo widener, or whatever other production trick I want to pull on a box that isn’t my computer. While it’s definitely not unlimited (I’ve reached the CPU cap on two projects so far) it’s much deeper than I expected and I’m not quite sure why the current MPC lineup only seems to get buzz with hip hop producers.
